How do you keep from bringing cockroaches with you from an old residence when you move to a new residence?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

You should do your best to eliminate the roaches before you move. A gecko lizard is the best way to eliminate roaches.

Cockroaches lay eggs, so you may be bringing them with you in boxes, furniture and so on. We had an infestation when I was growing up, and my mother made us check everything and scrape the eggs off and that pretty much ended the problem. Make sure you use new boxes, clean everything that is inside when you move.

I have been in the Pest Control business for 18 years. I know a little about cockroaches. The most common roach is the German Roach or Blatella Germanicus. It generally does not lay eggs. Other roaches do but are rarely the ones you find in your home. Instead it carries the egg case or Ootheca through hatching. It will very rarely deposit the egg case in a high humidity environment near a food source but this is rarely the case.

The female supplies the egg case with moisture. If she dies more than a few hours before the egg case is ready to hatch out, the young dry up and die.

The young are far too small to be eliminated by going through things.

The best bet, though rarely practical, is freezing or cooking. By cooking I mean subjecting items that may hold roaches to temperatures in excess of 120 degrees for a period of 20 minutes. This will kill any and all insects in all states of development.

Foggers and sprays will work, but are ancient technologies and require years of experience to make them work. I know. At one time that and a few primitive baits were all we had. Gel baits properly used will get the job done.

When entomologists want to raise roaches to study they use cardboard, food and water. The cardboard gives the young a place to hide from the adults as they tend to make snack food out of them until they are a little larger than snack size. They can also survive on the glue that holds the cardboard together and water. Same for most organic glues used to put paper bags together and the glue that used to be used on stamps and is still used to seal envelopes.

Cardboard is your enemy when it comes to roaches. New boxes for sure, ditch the old ones as they may harbor young roaches.

Placement of baits in cabinets, closets, dressers, the kitchen and pretty much all cracks and crevices throughout the home before moving in will go a long way towards preventing/eliminating an infestation. Roaches are drawn to corners. Baits should be placed, according to the label, in corners.

They must have water, so provide them with bait near water sources. (The condensate tray in the bottom of the refrigerator is a common source of water.)

If you limit their food sources severely they will be more likely to eat the bait and die. The bait is "shared" through cannibalism. One eats the bait and dies. All those that feed on the one die. They are fed on and kill those that eat them. Up to 44 can die from one roach ingesting the bait.

And for what it's worth...I have NEVER heard of a roach infestation being eliminated by using a living critter of any kind and certainly not a Gecko. If you want it as a pet...fine. Just don't count on it to eliminate an infestation of roaches. Ain' happenin'.

Nor have I EVER heard of a Gecko being able to eliminate a roach infestation.

I do know that if you are moving and want to rid your possessions of any cockroaches you must shrink wrap everything before the move.Such as books and magazines with-in which they can lay eggs. As they also need air to breathe, shrink wrapping your items that may have roaches or roach eggs in it will kill them as they can not breathe and will suffocate.

It is difficult to get rid of all cockroaches, so be very careful when packing as they like to hide and lay eggs in small corners (and in toilet paper and I suggest you throw away all toilet paper and buy new ones) and as said previously in cardboard boxes, and when seen they move very fast.

Good Luck and I hope this was useful.

How should you load a you-haul truck?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Even though vehicle suspension and shock absorbers have greatly improved through the last 50 years, it is still a good idea to balance the load in any type of truck used for moving, whether a pick-up truck or large U-Haul vehicle. Don't load one side with heavy appliances; instead, balance the load on both sides, and put lighter weight items to the center.

As you bring things to the truck, make 3 areas in the yard: (1) heavy boxes and appliances or other heavy furniture (2) medium-weight boxes and (3) light items.

I'd start by loading heavy items along the cab / front wall. Then move down both sides, adding heavy items. Put the bed frame, standing up, along the wall behind a heavy item such as a dresser, washer, dryer, etc. On the opposite wall, put in your mattress and box springs, standing on its side, and again, brace these 2 items with a heavy item in front. (Tip: Don't put a washer or dryer in front of a mattress or box springs, just in case there is lint or drippy water from a hose.) If you have a couch and living room chairs, put the couch either across the front... or couch on one side and 2 chairs on the other side.

Next, load heavy boxes into the center at the front, such as books, heavy gym equipment, or even spare tires you want to take with you.

Now, at the front and down both sides, you have created "table space" on top of the washer, dryer, dresser, chest of drawers. Put your lighter weight items on top of these areas. **Make sure to mark anything breakable with the word FRAGILE in block letters on every box, and mark it on all sides of each box. Stack pillows and other "soft" non-breakable items on top; you can also use soft items to block and brace lighter-weight boxes. Make sure to use plastic garbage bags to hold pillows, blankets, etc., because moving is always a dirty job.

Now, you should have a middle area (front, center) that is empty from the floor up. Use this space for heavy items and stack medium-weight items on top. You might want to mentally divide this space and put "alike" items together. For example, you could make a row of kitchen chairs along the front (center); use the seats to start your "row" of heavier boxes, and stuff small boxes between the legs. The next higher row should be lighter weight items.

** IMPORTANT** As you work, lightly pull or tug against items you've placed. You want little to NO movement of boxes or other items. If a box has too much room and jostles around, brace it with something.

Keep working down each side, while you stand in the center of the truck bed. As you move back, fill in the center area. Always put heavier items on the bottom at the floor, with medium-weight next, then lightest weight items.

Kid's stuffed animals, pillows, extra blankets, and even clothes on hangers make good fillers or to lay on top as the final "layer" of packed items.

As you get to the back, remember to leave room for the dolly (if you have one). And, use the very back to pack all *important* items, items you will need in the first few days, suitcases with 3-4 days' worth of clothing, medications, toiletries, a box of basic cleaning supplies, toilet tissue, paper towels, and anything you think you wish you had within easy access as you move in. If you are moving to a local area, all perishable foods should go in last also so these would be unloaded first.

Be a safe packer.

  • Never put heavy items above the level of the floor/bed of the truck.
  • Never put heavy or dangerous/sharp items on a spot above the bed of the truck-- things can/do shift and could fall on you while unpacking.
  • Never put boxes of cleaning liquids near boxes of food items, or near clothing / fabrics-- it the liquids leak, it could contaminate food and ruin fabrics.
  • Always put things into plastic bags that could leak. Even a bottle of shampoo can cause a huge mess if the bottle lid comes off or the container breaks.
  • Never try to hoist a heavy item alone-- protect your back and shoulders from injury. Have adequate help.
  • Always pull and push on packed boxes to see if they are tightly in place. Brace items with other items; wedge things in between other items.
  • Even in a U-Haul, you can use rope or tie downs to "tie" items that could fall.
  • Always make sure the sliding door, or the tailgate on a pick-up, is securely fastened. Nothing is worse than having belongings falling out the back of a truck!
  • Never let anyone ride in the back of the U-Haul--- boxes or belongings can shift and fall.

Tips for parents:

Always pack 3 boxes for every child you have. The 3 boxes should be easily accessible. The boxes should be labeled with the child's name and contain:

  • Box #1 - Enough clothing for at least 3 days.
  • Box #2 - Favorite foods and treats that child likes the most. It will help when you are frazzled and the kids need food.
  • Box #3 - A few of the most favorite toys, books, or other things to keep a child entertained-- even if the child is a teenager!

Make sure that regularly used medications are also packed within easy reach.

It obviously depends from where and to where. But in general terms, you will probably need to use a container - a shipping agent will be able advise you on the safety requirements and cost. As a rule of thumb, the adminstration and import duty will be roughly the same as the shipping costs.

How do you move to apartment?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Moving into a new apartment can seem overwhelming, but with some organization and planning ahead, it can go off without a hitch. Here are some steps to moving into your apartment safely. 1. Call your utility, telephone, cable/satellite and Internet providers about transferring service to your new address.

2. Collect all of the moving supplies like boxes, markers, tape and other packing materials.

3. Purge all of the things you do not need to move; eliminate extra plastics, worn out items.

4. Hire a moving company that is trustworthy and reliable, unless you plan on moving the items yourself. 5. Scour your old apartment.

6. Collect all of your keys together and give them to the landlord. Have the locks changed at your new home or apartment immediately. 7. Transport all your possessions into the new apartment. 8. Tell your service providers you have moved into the new apartment, and test to see that all utilities are working properly.

9. Complete a walkthrough, including taking pictures of the condition of the apartment. You should do this both upon moving in and moving out.

9. Test smoke detectors to see if they are working, and get to know your neighbors.

What is the volume of a cube with 5 inches on each sides?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To find the volume of a cube in inches you first need to find the volume of the cube in whatever unit is provided. If it was already inches then just follow these steps, but if it is in cm or any other form, you will need to convert it. This can easily be done on an online unit converter. Anyway, here are the steps to find volume...

1) Look at what the length of one side is.

2) Look at what the length of the height is. It should be the same because it is a cube and all the measurements on a cube are equal.

3) Multiply them together. EG. length = 3cm * height = 3cm = (3cm*3cm) = 9cm

4) Then look at what the width is. This should also be the same as the height and length because it is a cube and all the measurements on a cube are equal.

5) Multiply the total of the length and height with the width EG. 9cm * 3cm = 27cm.

Then you will have your answer! I hope this helped and good luck!

I know this from school and it is also not hard to work out... :)

How does a clock turn?

User Avatar

Asked by Chrisjezer

A clock is a device to measure the passing of time . Early clocks used water dripping into a container with measurements inscribed on the sides . Later when clockwork was invented , a weight on a string or chain was used to pull a system of gears round , with hands or pointers connected to the relevant gears to indicate against a circular scale(face) . Later still a thin steel strip was wound tightly into a coil to replace the weight on a string , allowing more compact clocks . In order to control the speed the gears turned at , an escapement , an oscillating wheel and arm arrangement............or a pendulum , the swing of which is decided by its length and the mass of weight at the free end...............were used .

Since the discovery of electricity , there were numerous new ways to devise clocks . For battery clocks a transistor oscillator generates a pulse at regular intervals which can be used to step the hands on . For mains power , the public grid has a closely controlled frequency which can been used as a time reference...........

Early digital clocks had the numbers marked on gear driven drums which rotated in the same manner as the hands on the original clocks , or cards or tabs were flipped over to change the numbers . Most digital clocks today use a seven segment display . These became popular with the advent of integrated circuits . They are so-called because with just seven bars in the shape of a figure eight , it is possible to generate any number from zero to nine by turning on or off the correct bars . Special integrated circuits(silicon chips) were produced to match these displays .

Some clocks today use liquid crystal displays , the numerals are made up of tiny tiny dots if you look close , complex electronics drive the display , but they still all need a time reference to control them . The most accurate clocks use an atomic source of which there are several in the world . You can make your computer syncronize itself with one of these over the internet . Radio signals are also transmitted in some countries to allow a good time reference ......

Some clocks are battery operated, while older clocks have gears inside.

How much does it cost to get your electricity turned on in a house?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It will depend on the rates your local electric company charges. If you have had an account in the past and have a good credit history, chances are they will not charge you a deposit. However, most have a set up fee. Make sure that your old house account has been turned off, so that you do not get double billed.
