They are just as deadly and damaging, take the one that happened in the Philippines for example.

What is the wiring diagram for a light switch in Australia or New Zealand?

In Australia we use 1.5mm2 TPS cable for lighting circuits. The colours for fixed wiring are red - active, black- neutral and green/yellow for earth, also white is used for switch wires. All luminaires and lighting points must have an earth at their location. The process for a simple lighting circuit for looping at the switch method (feed starts at the switch) - one switch and one light point is:

The feed (active) goes to the common point on the rocker switch and the neutral goes to the loop terminal on the rocker switch. The earth is connected to a two screw connector separate from the switch. A switch wire is then connected from terminal 1 of the rocker switch to one of the main terminals (these are the terminals across which the lamp terminals are connected) on the batten holder ( this is the fitting which holds the lamp). The other main terminal on the batten holder is connected to the loop terminal on the rocker switch with the neutral. The earth conductor is connected from the two screw terminal at the switch position to the earth terminal in the batten holder.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

Why Is New Zealand An Active Landscape?

New Zealand is an "active landscape" because it lies on a continental fault line.

Earthquakes and volcanic activity are the result of movement between tectonic plates. These plates constantly move as underground stresses are released through the Earth's crust. The islands of New Zealand are situated over the boundary between the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates. The Pacific "Ring of Fire" is the area where most of the world's seismic activity takes place. It is a ring encircling the Pacific Ocean in a roughly horseshoe shape, beginning at New Zealand, continuing up through the Philippines and Indonesia, through the edge of the eastern Asian countries, then down the western coast of the USA and South America.

What is the height to place a light switch in New Zealand?

Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz power supply service. In US the max height from the floor to the top of the switch is 48". Answer for countries in Europe and other world areas running a 50 Hz power supply service. For UK current standards (17th edition) the top of the switch can be no higher than 1200mm from finished floor level, nor the bottom be less than 450mm from finished floor level, so anywhere between these that suit your needs would be fine.

The correct answer to your question will depend on the exact location of the light switches in particular if the location is subject to damp conditions, such as in a bathroom, shower room, kitchen or anywhere outside a building.

When does daylight savings officially start and end?

Daylight Savings Time:

Starts in the US on the second Sunday in March when clocks are set ahead one hour at 2:00 a.m. local standard time, which becomes 3:00 a.m. local daylight time

Ends in the US on the first Sunday in November when clocks are set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. local daylight time, which becomes 1:00 a.m. local standard time.

These dates were established by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, Pub. L. no. 109-58, 119 Stat 594 (2005). NOTE - Hawaii and most of Arizona do not use DST

* In 2008, DST begins on March 9 and ends on November 2. * In 2009, DST begins on March 8 and ends on November 1. Many other countries observe "summer time", but may not change their clocks on the same dates as the U.S. Daylight time and time zones in the U.S. are defined in the U.S. Code, Title 15, Chapter 6, Subchapter IX - Standard Time.
