On the Canadian side you can walk along the river and view both the Horseshoe Falls and the American falls for free. The cost is in getting there, and that depends on where you are traveling from.

The term "Niagara Falls" has more than one meaning. There are actually three falls that constitute the waterway collectively called Niagara Falls. They are the magnificent "Horseshoe Falls," which is almost entirely within Canada, as well as the lesser "American Falls" and the small "Bridal Veil Falls, both of which are in the US.

The Niagara Falls were created at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation about 10,000 years ago. When the ice melted, the Great Lakes drained over the Niagara Escarpment by way of the Niagara River. The River initially cut a gorge through the escarpment. The layers of rock in the escarpment have a top rock formation that is composed of harder stone that eroded more slowly than the underlying materials. The softer rock preferentially eroded away, undercutting the harder rock. The unsupported top rocks gave way from time to time creating a sharp edge for the falls.

If the entire formation had been softer rock the present Falls would have been reduced to a series of rapids.

The distance between the American extremity of the Niagara Falls and the Canadian extremity is 3,409 feet (1,039 m).

You can ride the Maid of the Mist boat that goes up to the falls, tour the botanical gardens, walk and shop the strip and take picnics or walks about the extensive parks and at night, dine on outside patios, and you can find a seat or grassy hillside to enjoy the fireworks or lights that are shone upon the Falls.

In winter The Maid of the Mist shuts down and snow and ice are a big feature. The Falls is impressive as all the trees are coated with ice from the constant misting - it's quite the winter wonderland so long as you dress for the occasion. Since it's low tourist season there is less to do, but it's much quieter and intimate as a destination.

There are such living organisms that live in the Niagara Falls. Animals like eels, microorganisms, and other aquatic animals. Sometimes there is deer, elk, and other large carcasses found floating around on the Canadian side.

Not only did Niagara Falls freeze over in 1932, it also froze over in 1911. It did not freeze solid, however, as there were a few trickles of water that still flowed. The link below has some spectacular photographs of both events.
