Oil Spills

Questions related to the causes and effects of an oil spill, and ways of cleaning them up should be asked here.

Why does oil sizzle and not explode?

Because the pressure isn't high enough to create an explosion - the evaporated water is free to move out of the oil, and so pressure doesn't have a chance to build up sufficiently to cause an explosion.

If however a large amount of water was put in a sufficiently small container of oil at sufficiently high temperature to vaporise all the water instantly, then the container could explode.

How does oil affect life and how does it not affect life?

Yes- this is very true.

There are bacteria in sea water that actually consume the oil. On calm water, oil may create a very thin film on water (like engine oil leaking from a boat) and not cause any significant environmental damage. If the area is small, some animals may avoid the area where the spill has occurred.

Oil may be dispersed by wave action, and the small bits of oil may not to dilute to harm sea life.

In relation to the BP oil spill, the area became so large, that it was difficult for birds to avoid the spill. The impact on many animals is given in the related link.

Is North Sea oil owned by the shetland islands?

To answer this question you need to do some research into the history of Udal Law in Shetland. The Shetland and Orkney Udal Law group (SOUL) can be found on the Internet and highlights the main points of the argument. Basically, although Shetland and Orkney are acknowledged as being under Scottish rule since the annexation, the annexation was not entirely legal. Shetland and Orkney were pledged as part of a dowry payment in 1468/9 with the understanding that sovereignty would not be handed over and the islands would be redeemed at a later date when the money could be raised. The Scottish Crown was fly - even though the Danish/Norwegian Crown made several attempts to regain control of Shetland and Orkney, the Scottish Crown refused. Shetland was increasingly brought under Scottish rule and the issue of sovereignty was never fully addressed. Under Udal law, outright ownership of land included the seabed - so if Shetland is still legally Scandinavian and Udal law has never been completely replaced, then the seabed around Shetland belongs to Shetland and not to Scotland. North sea oil around the Shetland basin therefore belongs to Shetland and the Scottish Crown is well aware of this. To openly address the issue of Shetland's sovereignty is thus to make this public knowledge...and the British parliament wouldn't want that...now would they?

What would cause a sulfur-like smell in your home after it rains?

Answer

Only a two cents opinion:

Quimical reactions in septic tanks.

When rain water gets into the tank its force quimically generate gases out to atmosphere. Considere look after a damaged pipe that links the septic tanks to atmosphere.

IMPORTANT:

Some of those gases do explode !!!

I had this same problem so I called a septic service and they chlorinated my entire system and thankfully have not had the problem since, and it's been about 4 years now.

What are the Comparisons of Exxon spill to bp spill?

In terms of size, BP is worse. In terms of damage, there's no clear answer. Here are my reasons.

The Exxon-Valdez spill was caused by a tanker accident causing oil to spill. The total amount of oil spilled is estimated to be 11 million gallons. The environmental damage was extensive. See related link.

The BP spill is ongoing and as such, my comments are limited to my knowledge as of May 28.

The BP well, Macondo, has been spilling oil since April 20. There have been various estimates of the rate. The latest estimate from a task force of professionals, is 12,000 to 19,000 barrels per day. A barrel contains 42 gallons, so the estimated rate is 504,000 to 798,000 barrels per day. Considering the well has been spilling for 38 days, this means that approximately 19 to 30 million gallons have already been spilled into the gulf. As of today, May 28, we do not know if this flow has been stopped.

So, it is correct to say that the BP blowout spilled more oil than Exxon-Valdez accident. However, is it a worse accident? Eleven people died in the fire. In this aspect, it is much worse.

Is it worse in terms of environmental damage? No two accidents are the same. The damage is continuing. So are the clean up efforts. The Gulf Coast area is much more accessible. The resources in terms of clean up equipment are much more available in the Gulf Coast. The ecosystems of Alaska and Louisiana are very different.

This will be a controversial question for some time. I have included information on the BP spill and three other very large spills, Exxon-Valdez, Ixtoc-1 and Gulf War spill. The Gulf War spill was the world's largest spill and the degree to which the oil impacted the environment is still controversial.
