I would probably put a primer coat on first. A good primer is Kilz, which will also cover stains. It is worth the money to buy a good brand of primer since it will save you work and make your new paint look its best.

If dent is small use a picking hammer and with the point work around the circle of the dent with the point trying to keep it even with the outside surface. Sand the surface when you get close and go to the flat side of a body hammer and smooth the outside where it got picked out, Apply a small amount fo body filler and sand to even the suface prime sand prime sand with different grits and repaint the surface

There are "bug and tar" removers in the car cleaning isle of the department stores. This will work to remove sap also. These will strip the wax off your car also, so it is a good idea to wax afterwards.
