What does Wicca have to do with St Patrick's Day?

Irish Wiccan's actually tend to oppose St. Patrick's Day. Due to the fact that he oppressed the pagan ways and "drove the snakes out of ireland". St. Patrick is the man most Christian denominations thank for the conversion of the ancient Irish Pagans. However, conversion of medieval Pagan populations to Christianity was never a sudden and complete transformation. In most cases, local folks were so deeply connected to their ancestral beliefs and deities that the missionaries had to shape their teachings to better fit the local Pagan traditions.

In Ireland, were Pagans worshipped a large pantheon of Celtic deities, the first and foremost divine being was a Triple Goddess representing love, fertility, and wisdom. Legend has it that St. Patrick, during his very best conversion speech, stood on top of the Rock of Cashel in the province of Munster and picked up a clover from the green lush of the Irish land. Showing the three leaves of the clover to the Pagans, he explained to them the Christian Trinity, and from this day on, the clover became the symbol of Ireland. This legend is an obvious and gross attempt by the clergy to christianize an old pagan symbol of the Triple Goddess.

Today, some Wiccans oppose St. Patrick's day because it celebrates the conversion of Pagans. However, there are Wiccans who actually enjoy the celebration because of its "hidden" Pagan meaning, and smile when they see devout Christians wearing a symbol of the Goddess.

From what I've heard and read over the years Savannah has the second largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the United States. New York has the largest. Now in terms of the largest celebration, if you're talking about the numbers of people I would think New York, Boston, Chicago and some other major metropolitan cities would have more people celebrating.

There are some great Irish Pubs that will be quite busy on the day, and the day before. you will want to check out barrett's barleycorn, brazen head, two fine irishmen, clancy's, dubliner pub, finnegans, Maggie mccalls. theres also mcflys tavern, mccormacks, Maggie mccalls, muldoons, o'briens lounge, o'leavers pub, o'connors Irish pub, and my favorite Sean o'casesy's

ive left off a few but this is a list of places that will be doing something for sure. if im not mistake some even have transportation to the various other places. if you are going for atmpshere check out the bigger ones with bands etc. if you just want a pint and corned beef, find a quieter place...all up to what you are looking for. when bands start being confirmed it will be easier to see the better places to go. don't be afraid to go out for a few drinks but go home and make your own corned beer cabbage and potatoes. its a great chance to have some friends over for a safe night (monday). but do try and get out somewhere and get a decent pint from the bar before hand. keep en eye out for the underground papers in Omaha for more updated information. you cant go wrong with brazen head or clancys or my personal favorite Sean o'caseys. but be safe Erin Go Bragh - and don't forget the green

If St Patrick was a Christian out to convert the pagans of Ireland why do most Americans today celebrate the holiday by getting drunk?

  • Because that's what America seems to do with most holidays. Memorial Day, Labor Day, 4th of July, New Years, etc. However, due to great Irish beer, it just makes sense to celebrate with a frosty one. Have you ever met an Irishman who didn't like beer? Also, the holiday has become a day of celebration, focusing not only on St. Patrick but the plight of the Irishmen, and a day to honor Ireland.
  • As a side note, there are more Irish-Americans in the US than there are Irish countrymen in Ireland, due to the throngs of immigrants that came to the US: the United States saw nearly 3.5 million Irish immigrants come to her shores seeking a new life. See the related link from more information.
  • Our ancestors had it really rough when they got here, as I'm sure you may know. So there is great pride in that Irish ancestry. While yes, some may pose, many of us like to celebrate our heritage/background - and we'll celebrate with people of every descent, Irish or not, especially if you buy us a beer.
  • I second that - either that or they think if they drink beer like the Irish, they are celebrating with them!!
  • Because Irish made beer and St. Patricks day is the only Irish holiday for Americans.

Because during LENT Catholics were obligated to abstain from a great many pleasures including drinking. But on Saint Patricks day the church absolves us of this burden resulting in excessive drinking and leads to much mayhem s well.
