Things You'll Need:

  • Soap and water Benadryl Cold compress Poison control number
  • Soap and water
  • Benadryl
  • Cold compress
  • Poison control number

Step 1

Determine if you can treat the sting yourself. A scorpion sting feels much like being stuck with a straight pin. You will probably experience swelling, redness and numbness around the affected area. You may see a bruise or black area form. However, if the sting results in blurry vision, tingling, involuntary eye movements, impaired speech, difficulty breathing, convulsions or hyperactivity, seek medical attention right away. If you are unsure, visit the nearest hospital to find out if the sting is poisonous. It is a good idea if someone else drives in case you experience blurry vision or shortness of breath.

Step 2

Wash the inured area with soap and warm water if you are treating the sting yourself. If you are hiking in the woods, make sure that the water has been properly filtered and clean. You can also apply a cold compress to the area for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Step 3

Call your doctor to find out if you need a tetanus shot and call the poison control center at (800) 362-0101 to discuss the sting and any immediate dangers. Tell the rep about any possible symptoms you may be experiencing.

Step 4

Elevate your injured limb to heart level if your arm or leg is stung. Keep weight off the area and ensure the sting stays isolated and clean.

Step 5

Take an antihistamine like Benadryl to help prevent extra swelling and itching. Call your doctor or poison control center first and ask about any complications with any other medication that you are currently taking.

No, and incase you're wondering, all the names you mentioned above refer to the same arachnid, the Solifugae. These are not spiders, but the two share many similar features such as eight legs, obvious fangs, and two separated body parts. The Solifugae is not venomous, nor can its bite be lethal. Are big black scorpions in El Paso Texas poisonous?

All scorpions are poisonous. Their venom is contained in their tail. Are they all harmful to humans? Not necessarily. Some have stings similar to a bee sting. But if you're allergic, be careful. A good rule of thumb is if you're allergic to any kind of stinging insect, stay away from scorpions, too. The only scorpion in the U.S. that is deadly to humans are Arizona Bark Scorpions, and usually only deadly to small children or frail adults. They aren't black, but they *are* native here. The only black scorpions here are Diplocentrus sp. and most of them aren't even solid black.

But if that's the kind you mean, then they're not horrible, but it won't feel good, either.

Is a lobster considered an insect?

A lobster is an arthropod, a classification of animals that includes insects. You could more accurately say lobsters are bugs rather than insects.

____

I would disagree. A lobster is not a bug. It is a crustacean(Crustacea). True bugs are in the class Insecta, order Hemiptera, suborder Heteroptera. Crustacea and Insecta both belong in the phylum Arthropoda. From that point, the classification differs. "Bug" is used as a catch-all term in every day, non-taxonomic language to refer to crawly things and sometimes infectious organisms (bacteria) or non-living infectious agents (viruses). An entomologist would never refer to a lobster as a bug.
