Small Engines

Miscellaneous small engines refer to low-power internal combustion engines (operating on gasoline/petrol), or electric engines. These include chain saws, lawn mowers string trimmers, snow and leaf blowers, wood chippers, and go-karts.

I have a minibike with a 5hp Briggs and stratton motor i need to know how i can hook a head light to the motor to make it work?

You're probably not going to be able to hook the headlight to the motor as you most likely don't have a battery or generator. Your spark is most likely powered by a magneto and there's no way I can think of to use the magneto to power a light. If you have electric start, then you have a battery and you can hook up directly to that. Your best option is to get a small motorcycle battery and mount it on the frame and power the lights directly from the battery. The downside is that you will have to recharge the battery from time to time. The alternative is to just get a flashlight or set of battery operated LED lights which last a long time and mount them to the frame. Good luck.

Best wheels for a balloon powered car?

I suggest using soda bottle caps, or maybe even Gatorade caps since they're larger and allow for more distance traveled. I would use bottle caps or CD's

When equivilant in power which pollutes more - Diesel Engines or Gasoline Engines?

I'm no scientist, but it would seem logical that diesel would actually pollute more, due to the fact that it is more of a less refined raw fuel, than gasoline.

Also, due to the fact that almost everyone in my area puts a smoke chip in their truck, this is a whole different story of pollution.

I am a diesel technician so let me shed some light on this. Pound for pound and like for like, a diesel is more efficient and pollutes less. This is because that a diesel engine unlike a gas engine does not limit the amount of air that gets to the combustion chamber and most new diesels are turbo charged to match air to fuel more efficiently.

I am assuming that both the gasoline and diesel have unrestricted air filters, recent tune ups, and are properly functioning. Diesel takes less energy to refine from the get go so there is first step in reducing pollution. Diesel has more heat calories or BTU's per gallon than gasoline, this equals more power per gallon and is second to reducing pollution. Third like I stated prior, diesel engines match air to fuel, not fuel to air like gasoline engines. A gas engine needs 14.7 to 1 air to fuel to burn clean and if anything alters that ratio it will burn dirty. A diesel in comparison can operate on a wide variety of A/F ratios and still burn clean.

The down fall of the diesel is oxides of nitrogen. NoX is created with combustion temps of over 2500 degrees F. This requires that O2 is not limited to the combustion process and in a diesel it is not. Gassers can produce NoX as well if the A/F ratio becomes lean. Both systems can be filtered through a catalytic converter to reduce these emissions. Hope this helps.

How do you set the timing on a klf220A Kawasaki 1998 Atv we need to know how to set it from the top by the head.?

Start by putting the flywheel on the ( T ) mark or on top dead center with the piston up . With both lobes on the cam facing down the pointers on the cam gear and the mark on the top of engine should be ligned up .

What is the horsepower of a Yamaha enticer 340 snowmobile?

The engine that comes standard with every Enticer 340 is a two-stroke, fan-cooled twin engine designed for this snowmobile. It reaches a maximum horsepower of 32 at 6,500 rpm, and a maximum torque of 25 foot-pounds at 6,000 rpm. With an engine size of 440-cubic centimeters, the Enticer can reach a maximum speed of 55 mph on the snow.

What causes ac to blow hot air?

Ther are really to many probable causes to even start diagnosing with out more info.Really need a tech to look at it,or understand how it works and have equipment to diagnose yourself. But to answer your question ,Something in your system is not operating the way it is supposed to.

5.5hp Briggs and Stratton OHV mounted on a go kart with throttle hooked up with governor still in place engine bucks real bad at idle how to fix?

Assuming the engine is bolted securely, then I would think it is indicative of a problem with the idle being too high and affecting the centrical clutch or just the clutch.

Do all 3.5 HP horizontal shaft engines have the same shaft size?

No, but it can probably limited to three different sizes/types. There will probably be two different diameter shafts and a tapered version that will cover all varieities.

How do you make a remote control car?

The main frame of the robot, the body which holds the motor, wheels, the receiver of the Remote Control kit and the batteries.

Motors can be used to drive a car which uses differential turning mechanism. This is the simplest steering possible and is achieved by turning one motor on and the other motor off to achieve steering. The on and off controlling of the motors is done by using the remote control.

The chassis is where you can really apply imagination to make the chassis as light as possible and suitable according to the challenge. What is essential to realize is that the weight of the motors is pretty standard and can't be reduced beyond a certain extent. In a robot with limited power supply (i.e. a battery) the power to weight ratio has to be kept maximum. This can be done by limiting the weight of the chassis. Chassis can be made out of:

  1. Wood (using right angles to attach motors, drilling and attaching the front wheel is easy)
  2. Plastic (not easily available, but if found makes a very light chassis).
  3. Metal (Most common chassis which is available at Lamington Road, not recommended because the motors can get misaligned very easily resulting in poor turning).
  4. Duct tape (alone can be used to attach the motors to each other, makes a fairly sturdy yet light chassis) 5. Plastic Pipes.

In a race, the lightest chassis is usually the best, whereas in a Robowars kind of challenge, a heavier chassis might be advantageous.

REMOTE CONTROLLED KIT:

Making a remote control kit at the beginners level is a hard thing to do. I would suggest you go in for a readymade kit which is available online and requires no experience to run and is fairly a beginner proof.

BATTERIES:

Used for supplying power to a remote controlled car, rechargeable batteries are usually the best ones. I suggest you visit this shop called Pitambara at Lamington Road which sells only batteries. Otherwise a standard 300-500 RPM motor runs well between 9 to 12 volts, and alkaline batteries of the brand Camelot or Zinc carbon batteries of brand Hi Watt. The appropriate series parallel combination can be used to provide more power than a standard battery can provide.

MOTORS:

For a remote control car, we use Geared DC Motors. A DC motor is a low torque, high RPM motor which has to be geared down to reduce the speed and increase the torque. The gearing is done internally in motors available in the market.

Motors convert electrical energy of the batteries to mechanical energy, which is used to drive the wheels. Motors should be of around 300-500 RPM and can be bought for around 200 INR (4 US dollars according to the current rate) at either Hindustan Electronics or Servo Electronics, both at Lamington Road. These motors should be connected with their shafts in a line with each other such that differential turning mechanism works.

WHEELS:

Wheels are mainly of two types in this basic car, one is the type attached to the motors at the back, which are used for steering, and another trolley (castor) wheel in front, which allows 360 degrees free rotation and avoids friction on the ground. The wheels can be put on the shafts either by using screws or by wrapping the shaft with masking tape first. The trolley wheel and masking tape are available at any Hardware Shop. The other two wheels may be bought out from a good collection at Servo Electronics.
