How much does a artificial heart cost?

In the USA, heart transplants cost about $145,000.00 but this does not include the separate doctor / specialist / surgeon's fees, anesthesia, tests, and costs for complications. It also does not include the ongoing costs of anti-rejection medications.

Medicare and Medicaid might cover some costs, but not all.

How long should I wait to play basketball after removing gallbladder stones?

First of all, it will depend on if your surgeon is able to remove the gallbladder and stones via a laparoscopic procedure or not. In some cases the laparoscopic procedure cannot be completed and the procedure is converted to an open cholecystectomy via a traditional incision. That rarely happens, but can. There are factors that will influence this. Your surgeon is the best person to predict what likelihood of this exists in each individual situation.

If the procedure is completed laparoscopically, There will be several small incision, including one located in the navel that will need time to heal. You will be decidedly sore for a number of days and taking pain medication. Each persons tolerance is variable, and must be taken into consideration.

If the procedure has to be converted intraoperatively to an open procedure, you will have an additional, longer incision. This incision would be below the rib cage on the right side and would require a longer time for healing and is more uncomfortable. Sometimes unforeseen circumstances can lead to this. Even the best of pre-operative screening cannot always avoid this.

Your surgeon would be the best person to consult as to the amount of time you would require before returning to playing basketball. At the very least, I seriously doubt if you would feel up to it before about 3-4 weeks at a minimum and longer if the procedure converts to an open one. You need to allow your body time to heal. Your doctor will clear you to play at the appropriate time.

You may also have some dietary adjustments to learn to live with. Big, fatty meals may leave you uncomfortable for several hours with the gallbladder gone. Your liver will now drain bile directly into your small intestine continuously instead of being concentrated for delivery on demand in response to a fatty meal. Each individual learns to cope with this in their own way.

As a former critical care RN, I am writing this from a rather broad perspective. Over the years, I have seen the procedure move from being done strictly in in a hospital OR, to over time, being done in outpatient surgery centers in select circumstances. That being said, there are strict criteria used in determining suitability in each situation as to where the procedure is done. Your anesthesiologist will also weigh in on the day of surgery as to if he or she feels that an outpatient surgery center is the appropriate choice for you. If your anesthesiologist does not feel the choice is appropriate, your procedure can be cancelled at the last moment. They are looking out for your best interests, and not their paycheck. That is a responsible anesthesiologist and one I respect.

Surgery centers are great places. They are very safe and add a more personal touch for your care. Depending on the individual patient, I have personally sent them home via car as little as an hour or so after completion of the procedure. Others need a longer time and this can vary. I have also had the procedure myself, thus perhaps more explanation than you expected. :-)

Who is Tom Brady's surgeon?

Not as of 9/24/2008. Brady hurt two ligaments in his knee, the Medial Collateral Ligament and the Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The proscribes course of action is 1) Let the MCL heal naturally, a process that could take up to 6 weeks. 2) In some cases a pre-operational rehabilitation program is started to strengthen the knee prior to the ACL surgery. 3) Have the ACL replaced. 4) Rehabilitation. The entire process should take approximately 9 months to complete.

How do you increase chin size without surgery?

How long after appendix surgery should you wait until you go swimming?

Well if you're on antibiotics I'm assuming you have an infection. Some infections (like swimmers ear or mono) can spread very easily in water. Stay out of the water until you not only feel better, but are done with your medication. Make sure you take every pill exactly as your doctor tells you to (you'll just get sick again if you don't).

How long do you have to wait to play sports after having arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a small tear in your meniscus?

I had surgery because I tore my acl, mcl, and my meniscus. It has been about two months now and I am hoping to play golf soon. I have been told you can play golf after two months. Running begins at 4 months post-op. If rehab goals are met, sports are allowed 6 months after surgery, however you will need clearance from your doctor prior to resuming sports.

Can this return after surgery?

Yes, this can return after surgery. Here are some steps you can take to help ensure a successful recovery:

  • Follow your doctor's instructions for post-operative care and rehabilitation.
  • Take any prescribed medications as directed.
  • Eat a balanced diet and get plenty of rest.
  • Stay active and perform light physical activity to help with healing.
  • Monitor any changes in your condition and contact your doctor if you experience any unexpected symptoms.

By following these steps, you can help to ensure that this condition does not return after surgery.

What happens in laparoscopic surgery?

In laparoscopic surgery, two or more ports are used to access the patient's abdomen. One port is used to slowly fill the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas, which expands the abdomen and thus the surgeon's field of view. The remaining ports are used for the passage of cameras and tools that allow the surgeon to complete the surgery with only minor incisions.

How successful is dental bone grafting?

I'm not exactly sure what the overall success rate is, but I know that it is very high (90%+ over 5 years). Today's implants are extremely durable, and if placed properly in the right patient, they can last many years. They are the closest thing to real teeth you can ever have.

Why are operating room walls green?

O. R. linen are green because, green is the opposite of red on the colour wheel. When you stare at any intense colour long enough and then look at a piece of white paper you will see the opposite colour, not the white piece of paper. In the operating room you are looking at blood which is red, when you lift your eyes from the operating field to look at any other surface it would appear to have a green tinge to it, so they paint the walls green, have green gowns, drapes and other linens to make it easier on the eyes. In fact the colour of the linen is called eyerest green.

What is the aftermath of cosmetic surgery on the patient and loved ones?

Some peoples' bodies have a very adverse reaction to cosmetic surgery, to a point where they end up in worse physical and mental condition than before they had the surgery. I think everyone should just be happy that they are alive and learn to live with their imperfections. After all, we ALL have them.
