I'm not really sure what you mean, but one example of what you might be talking about are the GPS systems we use everyday. The GPS system reads information from several geosynchronous satellites to give us our exact position on the earth. It's the same method sailors have been using for thousands of years, only they take readings of the stars at night to tell them where they are.
