What is Gary's Old Tractors?

Gary's Old Tractors is an old antique tractor page about Gary and his wife's hobby of restoring old tractors.

Gary also has a "PowerPage" that he features along with a "Gary's Old Tractors Farmers Chopper" that he built from scratch. Even a "train" for kids!

Gary also has an extensive antique tractor links page.

A down to earth, fun tractor page featuring the antique tractors that both Gary and Dolores Dougherty have.

How long can a lawn tractor run on a gallon of gas?

You don't say the make and size -and there are thousands of different lawn tractors ! - I once had a John Deere 640 that would run about 4 hours on a gallon, but that's just a rough estimate.

Please have make and model, plus engine type when you ask questions like this.

Can anyone drive a tractor trailer too pull an RV trailer?

There are limitations, so the question isn't as simple as just saying yes or no. If you're wondering whether or not recreational vehicles are dangerously unregulated, and largely operated by unqualified people who pose a significant risk to others on the road, the answer is a resounding yes on both counts. But, that aside..

Certain types of vehicles are exempted from requiring a CDL by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). These include:

  • Military vehicles, when operated by military personnel in the course of their duties
  • Firefighting and other emergency vehicles, when operated by emergency services personnel in the course of their duties
  • Registered farm vehicles, provided they are not operated on a for-hire basis, are used solely and exclusively for the activities of the farm, are operated within a 150 mile radius of the farm, and are operated by the farmer, members of the farmer's immediate family, or direct employees of the farmer
  • Recreational vehicles, operated on a leisure basis (not a for-hire basis)

In these instances, licencing requirements are left to individual states, and those requirements vary far and wide between all 50 states. The political influence wielded by the senior community tends to influence how tightly a state will run their licencing requirements (there is, after all, a reason why an otherwise unnoticeable car becomes something to loathe and fear the moment you notice it has Florida plates on it). Some states require non-CDL Class A, B, and C licences. Some states have the "chauffeur's licence" system, and require an endorsement for non-commercial tractor-trailer type vehicles. However a particular state does it, most of them will require you to obtain a DOT physical, and require you to carry a DOT medical card on you, the same way commercial drivers are required to. As I do not know your particular state, I cannot tell you what system your state uses - you'd have to inquire with your state's DMV office.

What color is the supply hose on Tractor-to-trailer?

It's normally green, with the emergency air line being red, and the pigtail being blue. However, this is simply common practice, and not necessarily the rule - I've seen tractors with both lines black, and the glad hands would have "S" and "E" stamped on them.

What does cubic capacity of engine indicates?

CC's (cubic centimeters) or Cu.In. (in3) (Cubic Inches) of displacement =

The amount of VOLUME in the cylinders, from the top of the piston to the bottom of the cylinder head, when the piston is at it's lowest point allowed by the crankshaft.

The "cubes" are the total volume of ALL of the engine's cylinders. For example, a Chevy 350 (5.7L) has 350 cubic inches of cylinder displacement including all 8 cylinders. So, divided by 8, each cylinder would be 43.75in3.

The easiest way to measure would be to just look it up in the engine's service manual specifications. OR, if for some reason you needed to measure the engine's actual cylinder displacement in real life, you could use oil or water (I'd recommend using oil) dump it into the cylinder through either the spark plug hole or the injector hole and measure it. (Be sure the piston is all the way down and that both the intake and exhaust valves are closed when you do that test!)
