The last steam passenger train was in 1961 but LT kept a number of steam engines for maintainace work when the electic power was switched off. The engines were used only on the surface and sub surface lines like the Met, District and Circle Lines NOT on the deep level tube lines. LT at the end operated ex GWR pannier tank 0-6-0's bought 2nd hand from BR. They were based at Neasden but were also used at Lillie Bridge(near Earls Court) and Acton works. Famously a number of years after BR had finished with steam engines a steam train would leave Neasden each day and run to Watford tip with all the waste materials. It was rather like a ghost train!! The FINAL steam train was in June 1971 when LT ran a final commemorative train from Moorgate to Neasden. LT did however allow steam trains to run again on the Met in the 1980's & 90's but they were for steams fans and not normal operations.

2) You will exit the subway at 96th Street and Broadway. Walk two blocks east to 96th and Columbus: Broadway ---> Amsterdam Avenue ---> Columbus Avenue.
On the A-C-E:1) Take the Uptown C train from 34th Street (Penn Station) to 96th Street. DO NOT take the A or E trains. The A is an express train, and, unlike with the 1-2-3, 96th Street is NOT an express stop on the A-C-E. The A train will not stop at 96th Street, and the E train goes to Queens after 50th Street. So, you can only take the C.
2) You will exit the subway at 96th Street and Central Park West. Walk one block west to Columbus Avenue.

There are a couple of stations in Jamaica, Queens, so I don't know which one you're talking about: there's the Jamaica-179th Street stop on the F line (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line), and there's also a Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer stop on the J-Z (the brown line) and E (of the A-C-E, the blue line).
The J-Z (the brown line) goes from Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer through north Brooklyn, and you can transfer to the L at the Broadway-Eastern Parkway Station.
The F goes from Jamaica-179th Street into Manhattan, and then back out to Brooklyn. Or, you can get off the F at Forest Hills-71st Avenue, and transfer to the R train (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line). The R train also goes into Manhattan, and then back out to Brooklyn (as do the Nand W). You can transfer from the R to the Nor W at the Lexington Avenue-59th Street stop in Manhattan.
You can also get from the J-Z or E (the Jamaica Center stop) to the F or R trains, if you wish. Take the E from Jamaica Center to Briarwood/Van Wyck Boulevard and transfer there for the F. Then you can transfer from the F to the R at Forest Hills-71st Avenue.
Or, you can get from the F to the J-Z. Take the F from Jamaica-179th Street to Briarwood/Van Wyck Boulevard, and transfer to the E. Take the E to Jamaica Center (or the stop before it, Sutphin Blvd Archer Ave) and transfer to the J-Z.

John Jay College is at 10th Avenue and W. 58 St. in New York City. Penn Station is at 34 St. between 7th and 8th Avenues. Here are 3 ways to get there:
1) Walk to the 8th Avenue Subway (blue circles on the signs); take any Uptown train except the E train to 59 St. The C is on one platform, the A is on a different platform, so you have to pick one.
2) Walk to the 7th Avenue Subway (red circles on the signs); take an uptown #1 train to 59 St.
3) Upstairs on 8th Avenue itself (one way northbound) take an M10 or M20 bus (the "M" means "Manhattan", so almost every bus has an M in front of the number). Get off at 58 St. or 59 St. Finally, if it's a nice day, and you have easy luggage, just walk north of 8th Avenue (or 9th Avenue, or 10th Avenue) toward higher number streets and get there for free. No matter what you have to go west (higher numbered addresses) to 10th Avenue for the school.
