It identified Germany as the nation that had started the war.

In recent years, many historians have evaluated the Treaty of Versailles as a thoroughly inadequate attempt at resolving the causes of World War I. The principal criticism focuses on the punitive nature of the treaty: Germany, considered to be the primary cause of the First World War, is held responsible for it, with financial (and other) reparations being demanded as a consequence. On this count and many others, that the Treaty of Versailles led directly to World War II's outbreak is disputed by few historians today.

The Treaty of Versailles is peace treaty that ended war between Germany and Allied powers and the treaty was signed on 28 June 1919,but it took six months of negotiations and at Paris Peace Conference the treaty was concluded and registered by the Secretariat of the League of Nations on 21 October 1919 and it signed in the palace of versailles.

Peace treaty which marked the end of WW1. Germany had to accept total responsibility of causing the war and pay reparations to certain countries. The treaty also prevented Germany from taking up arms.

It resulted in the collapse of three Empires, The Russian Empire that evolved into the Soviet Union, The Austo-Hungarian Empire that was divided into national states and the Ottoman Empire that was partly ruled by British and Franch protectorates and partly given indepenence.

The aims of the other main combatents were unacheived, Germany, Britain and France had expended all their wealth and manpower for little result. France gained back the territory it lost to Germany in 1871 and everyone went home and raised another generation of kids so they could do it all again 20 years later.

France was represented by its Prime Minister, Georges Clemenceau. He wanted to force Germany to pay France all she needs to repair the damage caused by the war; make the Germans admit to the world that they alone caused the war; take revenge on Germany for humiliating French in earlier wars and for the suffering she has caused in this one; and make Germany so weak that she will never dare to attack France again.

The Germans were absolutely outraged by the Treaty of Versailles! Let's look at why they were upset:

- War Guilt Clause: They had to accept all the blame for starting the war.

- Compensation: 6.6 billion pounds to the Allies.

- Disarmament: 100,000 soldiers. 6 battleships. No armoured vehicles and aircrafts.

- Loss of European Land: Danzig --> Poland. North Schleswig --> Denmark. Alsace-Lorraine --> France. Some land I don't remember the name of --> Czechoslovakia.

- Loss of Colonies: Overseas empire was given to France and Britain as an act of Self-Determination, one of Wilson's 14 points, but the colonies merely swapped owners.

The terms were too harsh against Germany.

The treaty did not address much of his "Fourteen Points"

Lloyd George was known as a realist and wanted Germany to pay for damaged they had caused but not too harshly so that he could keep alliance with Germany. He was worried in case another war would begin. His main aims were for Germany to lose it's colonies and navy because they were threat to the British empire.Also, Germany was Britain second largest trading partner.

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Treaty of Versailles.

to create a state that would last for a thousand years: 'The Third Reich'. He wanted to create a state and a capital (Berlin renamed as Germania) to rival ancient Rome.

The German people were unhappy with it's terms and many felt it should have never been accepted in the first place. Reparations were heavy and there were limits imposed on military build up, etc. Hitler took advantage of these bad feelings and the politicians were referred to as "the traitors of Versailles:

Russia had dropped out of World War 1 in 1917 and the new Bolshevist government had signed a separate peace treaty with Germany, so Russia was not involved in any way with the Treaty of Versailles.

It was signed by U.S. president George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and Mexican President Carlos Salinas in December 19th 1992. It came into force in January 1, 1994.

Germany was held reasonable as well as its' partners.

Clemenceau (France) wanted to weaken Germany to make sure that they could not attack France again as they had in 1871 and 1914, hence why he demanded heavy reparations and wanted the Rhineland to become an independent state

Woodrow Wilson (America) took a more internationalist view with his main demand being the League of Nations and he did not want to punish Germany to severley.

Lloyd George (UK) took the middle ground between France and America as they wanted to punish Germany but they did not want to cripple it as Germany was a large trade partner before the war and it was hoped that the trade links could be restored after the war.

Woodrow Wilson made this treaty to have germany to accept full responsibility and pay millions of $ in reparations. They also had to disarm compltely and give up all overseas colonies and some territory in europe.

Germany had NO choice. So they signed.

But it was never passed with wilson's laws. the senate had the new and"improved' version(made by Henry Cabbot lodge, an enemy of Wilson)
