Also, Germany reacted very badly to it in the beginning until the left wing of their country was convinced that they had no other choice. For the Treaty to be effective, several payments were to be made by the German government which would handicap their economic reconstruction. In addition, Germany's military power was cut only to 100,000 soldiers and the nation was not allowed more than that. It meant that Germany lost control over war aircraft, submarines and battle tanks. After Germany failed to keep up on its war reparations France decided to occupy the Saarland area of Germany and kept it for years. Germany was economically devastated and had a tiny army and so was helpless and at the mercy of France.

The treaties worked in the sense that the countries backed each other up when it came to war, however the creation of the treaties meant that countries felt they had more power as others were backing them up, so in a way it was contributing factor towards the wars, meaning they did not succeed in their aim of peace.
