What led the united States to use atomic weapons against Japan?

Japan refused to surrender after her cities were burned to the ground and the bloody battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Dropping the Atomic Bombs was the ONLY way to get the Japanese people to surrender. It was either drop the Atomic Bombs and end the war in 1945, OR, INVADE Japan and lose hundreds of thousands or millions of people and prolong the war for another Year.

What are 3 air bases in Hawaii where the US had planes?

Pearl Harbor, Schofield Barracks, and Bellows Field were all bombed during the attack. However, Hickam Field (located adjacent to Pearl Harbor) and NAS Kaneohe (now an MCAS) were also attacked, as was Wheeler Army Airfield, so there were many more than just three military bases that were attacked.

What was the political and economic significance of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a very significant event in human history. Politically, it meant that Imperial Japan was finished and had no choice but to surrender, which it did. It also ushered in the nuclear age, and nuclear weapons have been the most important factor in international politics ever since that time. In economic terms, it meant that a lot of money was going to be spent by various nations in order to build nuclear weapons. A major defense industry was thereby created. There are many other consequences as well, too many to mention. Large events have many consequences, and the consequences have their own consequences, in an ever expanding sequence that propagates forever.

Why did US attack Germany first?

Short answer: Japan wasn't the biggest threat to the World, and the US Gov't made the (correct) decision to try to avoid fighting a two-front war. Germany was rapidly taking over Europe, and showed no signs of stopping unless the US could successfully intervene.

When was Harry S. Truman running for president?

Harry S. Truman served the remainder of late-President Franklin D. Roosevelt's fourth term of office, from April 1945 until January 1949. He was elected President in 1948, and continued in office until 1953, when he was succeeded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Truman nearly lost the Democratic party endorsement in 1948, due to resistance from Southern Democrats. As a result, he faced three major opponents in the November general election, including legendary Senator Strom Thurmond (D-SC), who temporarily left the Democratic party to run as a Dixiecrat (no, really).

General Election 1948

Democratic Party.........Harry S. Truman/Alben Barkley

Republican Party..........Thomas Dewey/Earl Warren (future Chief Justice of the Supreme Court)

Dixiecrat Party.............Strom Thurmond/Fielding L. Wright

Progressive Party.........Henry A. Wallace/Glen H. Taylor

Republican Thomas Dewey was expected to win the popular election and accumulate the most electoral votes. The Chicago Timeswas so confident of Dewey's success, they pre-printed the next day's paper with the front page headline, "Dewey Defeats Truman!" When the electoral votes were tabulated, however, Truman had defeated Dewey by a wide margin, 303 electoral votes to Dewey's 189. Thurmond carried four Southern states and won the remaining 39 votes.

Reelected in 1948The 32nd President of the United States was Franklin D. Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was in office from March 4, 1933 until April 12, 1945 when he died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Harry S. Truman, the Vice president succeeded President Roosevelt to become the 33rd, and finished Roosevelt's term. In 1948 Harry S. Truman was reelected into office, and served as president from April 12, 1945 to January 20, 1953.

What bomb sunk the USS Arizona?

yes. The USS Arizona exploded and sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Why did the Jews migrate to Israel after World War 2?

Jews migrated to Israel after WWII as it was their ancestral homeland, and the events of WWII had shown that Jews were not welcome in Europe. Jews had been migrating to what was then the British Mandate of Palestine (after WWI) for years before WWII, however, and "Palestine" had always had Jews living there.

Why was the USS Arizona the only battleship from Pearl Harbor that was memorialized?

The USS Arizona (BB-39) isn't just a memorial - it's also a huge WWII gravesite. Of the 2,402 sailors killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor, 1,177 were killed aboard the Arizona; of those killed, 1,102 remained entombed aboard the wreck after it sunk and were never recovered.

The wreck was partially stripped (upper sections were cut away and moved to Ford Island, where the wreckage still remains), but what was left is considered a military gravesite. Due to the number of sailors entombed there, the Arizona became the logical choice for a Memorial site for visitors and survivors. Over time, it's grown to be the memorial "focal point" and national symbol for all those who were killed during the attack, though there are other spots around the island.

The National Park Service tends the site, including the wreck.

What was Albert Einstine's role in the creation of the first atomic bomb?

Nothing. His only connection to the atomic bomb was to sign a letter written by Leo Szilard (the inventor of the atomic bomb, though Einstein did not know this then) that warned FDRthat Nazi Germany might do it first.

What is the value of newspaper Chicago tribune December 7 1941?

What caused the US to get involved in world war 2?

To place any blame on the outbreak of World War Two on the United States is placing blame on the wrong nation. If Great Britain and France knew their policies of appeasement would fail to satisfy Nazi Germany, then they would have taken advantage of German military strength long before it became a vital threat. The Treaty of Versailles was a bad treaty, it added later on to German nationalism and eventually to Nazi fascism.Imperial Japan, whose emperor was treated as a god, already had problems just by it's own making. The emperor and his military dictators could have prospered as it does today, by using their skills at making war, to skills for building consumer products to compete in the world.

Stalin, dictator number 2 in cruelty, chose to make a treaty with Hitler, dictator number 1. We can charge off Mussolini, he gained by his alliance with Hitler, and when it came to war, Italy did little to threaten any nation, except for poor underdeveloped ones.

The graves are not at the beach itself but are located in Normandy at a special graveyard. There are close to 40,000 graves the last I heard. I could be wrong because some families have transferred their loved ones to their own nation.

How was World War 2 broke out?

Japan attacked China in the 1930's, Germany attacked Poland in 1939, then Japan attacked the US in 1941...global war.

When was the first bomb dropped in the US?

If you are referring to the Atomic Bomb. the first one was dropped (tested) at Alamagordo, New Mexico on July 16th, 1945.

The Trinity test device on July 16 was not and could not be dropped (it had no ballistic casing and they wanted to take careful measurements on it) it was detonated on the top of a 100 foot steel tower. This was much lower than the altitude of the 2 airbursts over Japan resulting in the fireball touching ground, melting it and picking up significant amounts of sand which became radioactive fallout. The fallout from Trinity was likely 2 orders of magnitude worse than the bombs dropped on Japan.

The first Atomic Bomb actually dropped in the US was the 1951 Ranger Able shot (yield 0.5Kton), which opened the Nevada Test Site. All 5 shots in this series were airdrops from B-50 bombers, with yields from 0.5Kton to 22Kton.

When did they drop the h bomb?

As far as I know, it didn't. All H-bomb detonations took place in peacetime, and I am unaware of any dropped from a bomber or delivered by a missile by any country. Two less-destructive A-bombs were dropped during WW2, on August 6 and August 9, 1945, by bombers of the US 509th Bomber Group. They were the only two nuclear bombs ever used in war. The first H-bombs were tested after the war, in 1946.
