Was there ever a US Navy ship that was allowed to fly the jolly rogers when ever they wanted?

Absolutely not - don't mistake Hollywood for reality. Any Navy Commanding Officer caught doing such a thing would be relieved of command on the spot and court-martialed once returning to port.

In all fairness though, no CO would ever do such a thing, nor permit such a thing to occur.

Even historically, Navy ship Captains never did something like that.

What rank is after chief petty officer?

What customs and courtesies should be observed on an US Navy ship Quarterdeck?

A Navy Ships Quarterdeck is considered a ceremonial area and should be treated as such. No skylarking or loitering is allowed. The Officer of the Deck has complete responsibility and authority on the Quarterdeck and should never be challenged. On approach from the ships brow to the quarterdeck one must turn and face the flag (aft) or salute the flag if military and covered. One must then turn and show ID and salute the Officer Of the Deck and ask their permission to come aboard (enlisted) or state that they have permission to come aboard (officers). When leaving the ship it is done in the reverse order and one asks permission to go ashore (enlisted) or states that they have permission to go ashore (officer). Hats or headgear are not allowed on the quarterdeck unless they are part of the wearers uniform. The Quarterdeck should not be used as a passage from one part of the ship to another. If it is necessary to do so permission from the Officer of the Deck must be requested and granted.

Why does a deck cadet prefer general cargo ships?

Ok, I am a Deck Officer. I will be serving onboard container ships.

I chose cargo ships as working on these is very hands on, the crew are usually hard working, down to earth, good at working in a team and probably most importantly, are not afraid to get their hands dirty!

In Comparison to cruise liners; I know that lots of (not all) officers on board cruise ships tend to be the opposite of the officers onboard cargo ships.

I think it is better for cadets to be in an environment where you can have some hands on experience on real ships, where responsibility is primarily for the ship and its cargo.

I think that some cadets may see attractions of a modern looking ship, exotic, exciting destinations, and a generally classy life, as a great career. The point is, cargo ships are the world's blood cells, without cargo ships, there would be no such thing as Global Trade. Therefore, if you think about it: working on a container ship is playing a vital part in the efficient, safe and skillful operation of the world's trade and is therefore a more rewarding career.

Certainly everyone has an opinion, this is mine.

Is the USS Enterprise a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier?

She is literally one-of-a-kind. In 1958, they planned to make six nuclear-powered carriers and call them the Enterprise class carriers, but they cost too much so they only made the one named USS Enterprise. Nimitz class carriers were built later. Although the Nimitz class carriers are loosely based on the USS Enterprise, the USS Enterprise is not in the Nimitz class and is quite different. So, no. The USS Enterprise is not a Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier.

How many General Officers are on active duty in the US today?

The best information I could find is that by law the limit for General and Flag officers is 877 for all branches. There is an exemption for an additional 12. That should bring the total to 889, but in December of 2006 there were actually 901. It's my understanding that those officers serving in non military positions, for example CIA or DOD intelligence are not counted in the authorized total.

When the Air Force deploys with army units do they wear army uniforms?

If it's a member of the Air Force embedded directly with an Army unit, yes. Case in point - Tac-P, who call in airstrikes and such. They're usually assigned directly to Army units. In an operational environment, they are very high value targets. Wearing a distinct uniform could make them stand out particularly to an enemy, and give them the (in this case, correct) idea that they'd be a target worth taking out.

In the case of entire Air Force units attached to an Army unit, but still operating as a homogeneous, self-contained unit, they're likely to retain their Air Force uniforms.

What kind of gun did John Wayne use in the movie The Sons of Katie Elder?

John Wayne used the same gun in several movies - a Winchester Model 94, chambered for a 32-40 round.

The John Wayne Commemorative Rifle (I have one still new in the box I got 24 years ago) has engraved on the receiver all of the movies he used that particular rifle in. It differs from the standard Winchester in that the lever has a larger loop, making it stand out. Any John Wayne fan can spot the difference - in some movies, he'll even swap a regular Winchester for that one.

Some of the movies he used it in are:

The Sons of Katie Elder

Hondo

The Searchers

Stagecoach

The Man who shot Liberty Valance

El Dorado

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon

The War Wagon

Red River

The Cowboys

McClintock! (my wife's favorite)

Rio Bravo

True Grit

Chisum

How the West was Won

Rio Grande
