A bad one if anything. America had been defeated for the first time (arguably) and Communism had come up on top. The USA was supposed to be number 1 and here they came out as number 2.

Why did some Canadians support the Vietnam War?
Most Canadians did not support the Vietnam War and few Canadians were involved. There were few that agreed at first and 1/2 of those changed their minds when the war began to rage on for a longer length of time than the U.S. War Dept., anticipated. In fact, Canadians took in draft dodgers and we were glad to oblige. There were mixed feelings everywhere. We did not look down our noses at any soldier fighting that war nor any draft dodgers. In fact, we have a couple of draft dodgers here now re the Iraq War, and the American gov't wants one of the young men back and we're trying to keep him here. Many Vietnam Vets have said this Iraq War is no different than the Vietnam War and perhaps we should start cleaning out our ears and listen to them. After all, do we ever get the whole truth from our governments! As a Marine Vietnam Veteran that fought with some Canadians who had joined the Marine Corps, the real answer to your question is that some Canadians believed what some Americans believed, that the Communist threat had to be stopped. You have to consider the times. Shortly after WW2, it was common to think that the purpose of the communist countries -mostly the Soviet Union and China-had the goal of taking over other countries by force if necessary. The threat of the spread of communism was a potent reason to fear the communists. Canada and the United States shared this same fear. So when Ho Chi Minh of North Vietnam had designs on re-uniting North and South Vietnam, many people in both countries felt he needed to be stopped. So it was not uncommon to find some Canadians in support of the war.

Why do Veterans get mistreated at home?
"American" military veterans were only "heavily" mistreated on two occasions: The US Civil War and the Vietnam War.
1. The Confederate soldiers/sailors who had fought for the south, were considered losers because they, 1) were considered traitors (by northerners) who had turned on their own country 2) had lost the war.
2. US GIs in Vietnam represented a threat to the not-yet-drafted American male, as he (the GI) had not fled to Canada or other wise successfully dodged the military draft. As one incident reflects this: "When a Vietnam vet amputee was noticed at an airport, and asked how he lost his limb, the veteran replied Vietnam; the questioner responded with, "you deserved it!" This was not an un-common feeling of US citizens against Vietnam War veterans during those times. And last, as in the US Civil War, the south lost again, and returning GIs were treated as "losers of the war."
Why are Vietnam veterans so unappreciated compared to World War 2 vets and Korean vets?
At the time that Vietnam became well known, which was the 1960's, the average WWII vet was 40'ish years old. Every US male from actors Jimmy Stewart & Clark Gable to Rowen & Martin's "Laugh In" were WWII veterans. From Bob Hope to Jerry Lewis, all participated in WWII, to some extent or another. When Vietnam came around, all these WWII men were wondering what the big deal was; "how come today's "fighting man" (during the 1960's) couldn't "whip" (defeat) these VC guerillas!?" As far as the the WWII vet was concerned, they had fought the "Big Leagues!" Against Battleships and Tiger Tanks! It was mostly personal (and group) pride...mixed in with some facts: For example WWII was the big leagues; but for the US it only lasted 3 1/2 years and used the Atomic Bomb. Vietnam lasted well over 10 years and could NOT use the atomic bomb. The US military advertised the Axis (Germany/Japan) men as evil; In Vietnam the military either didn't try, or was ineffective in advertising against the communist enemy in Vietnam. Which came back to haunt the military when men began saying "What are we fighting for?" All the Army had to say was "to stop the Commies!" The military (Air Force, Navy, Marines, Army, Coast Guard, etc.) either didn't want to say anything (those words, "to stop the commies, or something similiar"), or they were stopped (ordered) from saying anything, or they were afraid, or...they just didn't think it was important. For whatever reason(s) the US military paid a price for not defending themselves, by simply saying a few words on their own behalf. WWII men, generally speaking, held a low regard for Viet vets, not even allowing them to join veteran organizations such as the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). And not being a declared war didn't hold any water! The US Civil War was NOT a declared war either (kinda hard to declare war on yourself). WWII men led the 1960's generation into Vietnam and onto the Vietnam battlefields. It was WWII men (veterans) that were the senior officers and NCO's in Vietnam...such as General Paul Harkins, General William Westmoreland, and General Creighton Abrams (the name sake of today's M1 ABRAMS Main Battle tank). The men of the 60's fought a war under the orders and supervision of men from the 1940's.
