What needs to be reset if the battery is disconnected in a Volvo S40?
This worked on my 2001 Volvo S40 1.9 T.
Dated 2011-05-30
As far as I know only the clock and the radio code need to be reset when the battery is disconnected.
Warning, use this procedure only if not working with any fuel related issues which I guess would mostly be when you replace the car's battery.
Connect the plus side of a small 12 volt battery via alligator clips to the small positive wire that attaches to the car battery and the negative of the small battery to a convenient place on the engine block. Positive to positive and negative to the engine block. Then remove the battery clamp screws and remove the battery. This might work even with a small 9 volt battery like the kind used in a smoke detector but I have not tried this so be aware. Replace the car battery, tighten the battery claps and remove the alligator clips and the small battery.
Alternatively buy a gizmo that plugs into the cigarette lighter / power outlet and turn the key to the 1 or 2 position (not sure) although I have never tired this.
Good luck

On a first generation Volvo s40 (99-04), this usually means that the thermostat or electronic coolant temperature sensor are malfuctioning or have failed.

Can you change the gear oil in a manual transmission if the fill plug will not loosen up?
Well this can be re-filled by removing the gear shifter; simply remove the plastic cover then remove the rubber boot at the base of the shifter, then remove four 13mm bolts that hold the shifter in place. Slide out the shifter then slowly pour your gear oil in the opening. Be patient because it fills slowly. Replace everything you just removed. thank you for your comment but a 300zx has a linkage between the shifter and the transmission. in other words the shifter is not mounted into the transmission itself. i did find another way. i removed the exhaust and the drive shaft to get to the output shaft end of the transmission. i had a gallon jug of gear oil with a pump that mounts on the bottle.i cut the open end off of an advil bottle and poked a hole in the bottom just big enough for the tip of the hose that is on the pump. the reason i chose the advil bottle is because it is the same diameter as the yolk on the driveshaft. i used electrical tape and went around the hose and the bottle until the hose was good and tight. then i just shoved the open end into the back of the transmission and pumped away. i used 3&1/2 quarts of oil. when i pulled the hose out a small bit of oil leaked back out and i had a bucket ready underneath to catch the excess oil. then i just put everything back together.

The previous description was for resetting the "Service" light.
To reset the check engine light, the car must be plugged into either an OBDII compliant scan tool, or a dealer's scan tool to retrive whatever trouble code has been stored, repair the problem, and then the light can be "reset".
