User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When George Washington was inaugurated for his first term as president in 1789, he had only one natural tooth remaining and was wearing his first full set of dentures made by John Greenwood. Previously he had had partial dentures which were held in place by hooking them around the remaining teeth. The Greenwood dentures had a base of hippopotamus ivory carved to fit the gums. The upper denture had ivory teeth and the lower plate consisted of eight human teeth fastened by gold pivots that screwed into the base. The set was secured in his mouth by spiral springs.http://www.americanrevolution.org/dental.html

Why was Washington inaugurated in New York City?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The inauguration of a US president is not entirely a matter of doctrine or law. The only constitutional stipulations are that the president swear the oath stated in the Constitution and the date upon which he should do so. Washington DC became the traditional location to swear in as president of the United States since Thomas Jefferson did so in 1743. Since then, it has been primarily a matter of the presidential individual wanting to get some rest before getting rogered by the press the next morning.

The majority of Washingtonians are outdoors people. Fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, to most other outdoor activies are a norm year around. Casual dress such as jeans and flannel shirts, teashirts are common. Big trucks and 4 wheel drives are found in a lot of driveways. Along with boats and rv's. Washington people are tough when the going gets tough, you wont see them looking helpless if the power goes out but instead firing up a woodstove or cranking up a generator and saying"bring it on" A true Washingtonian is more at home in nature than in a city.
