Since colonial times Chile has had a mix of Spanish and Mapuche culture. Chilean folk music and dance is an important part of society.

In the summer, it can be hot, but what would you expect?

In the fall, it is a bit of a mixture. In the early fall, it will be just a little cooler

than summer. In the middle fall, it will be cold in the morning, but heat up towards the afternoon. There might be some cold days brought in by the fog though. It will get colder and rainier as it comes towards winter.

The winter will be quite cold, but you shouldn't expect it to snow. Some snow might fall off the mountains occasionally (don't worry, its not an avalanche) but

you shouldn't really expect snow unless you are at one of those teeny tiny villages on the Andes. Or at a ski resort.

Chile is on the western coast of the continent of South America, this is the boundary between two tectonic plates, the Nazca plate (which is an oceanic plate) and the South American plate (a continental crustal plate).

In this region the Nazca plate is moving eastwards towards the South American plate. The dense oceanic crust of the Nazca plate is being forced under or subducted beneath the less dense continental crust of the South American Plate.

The Nazca and South American plates are converging at a rate of approximately 80mm / year. This causes stress to accumulate resulting in elastic strain which stores elastic potential energy. Once the stress exceeds the strength of the rocks in the crust a brittle failure occurs, causing in this case thrust faulting to occur. The stored elastic strain energy is released in the form of seismic waves.

This form of thrust faulting usually results in the most powerful earthquakes and in the past Chile has experienced a magnitude 9.5 earthquake caused by the same tectonic plate motions - the most powerful ever recorded.

There have been at least two "famous" earthquakes that have affected Chile.

The Valdivia earthquake that occurred at 19:11 GMT, 14:11 local time on the 22nd of May 1960 Chile 1960 and which at Magnitude 9.5 was the largest earthquake ever recorded on earth.

The recent (27th of February 2010) earthquake occurred at 06:34 GMT, 03:34 local time and had a magnitude of 8.8.

When I lived in Chile, I ate empanadas pretty regularly. I like them with cheese inside, but they come with a lot of different things inside. I still make them here in the States sometimes. They also serve a lot of sea food; with such a long coast, I think that makes sense. There are also "Mote con huesillo", "Pastel de choclo", "choripanes", "Churrrascos", "Humitas", "Charkikan", and "pantrucas" =)
