Is drawing on money legal?

United States currency and coinage are governed by federal law through the U.S. Treasury Department. Generally, it is illegal to fraudulently deface, mutilate, impair, diminish, falsify, scales or lightens any coins minted or "coined" in the United States or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in use or circulation as money within the U.S. (18 U.S.C. 331)

It is also a crime to fraudulently possess, pass, publish, sell or attempt to possess, pass, publish, sell or bring into the U.S. any such coin with knowledge that the coin has been altered, mutilated, defaced, etc. (18 U.S.C. 331)

What this means is:

If you destroy the bill while drawing on it, it's illegal.

If you alter it by means of drawing to fraudulently change it's value, (from $1 to $10, say), it's illegal

If you deface it to the point where it's not recognizable, it's illegal.

If you draw glasses, a mustache and a funny hat on Abe Lincoln, it's perfectly legal.

Why is charcoal a limited drawing medium?

Charcoal is:

monochromatic - you are have color value, but are limited to one color.

thick - the drawing material does not hold a point well, so you are limited to broader strokes and less detail.

messy - there is a large amount of "dust" which results in dirty hands, smudges on the surfaces around the work and on the finished piece.

indelible - this is one medium you should not make a mistake with as it is virtually impossible to erase.

impermanent - even if you use a spray fixative, charcoal drawings do not usually survive long periods of time.

As a medium for gestural sketches, planning and layout work, studies and practice, and life drawings charcoal is adequate to the task, but would not be my first choice.

What is a fold line in technical drawing?

A technical drawing will show all the surfaces that are to be modified, say for example by machining. The various views, like top, side and front are put on the page in a location such that if the page was folded the views would be in the correct location as if looking at the part through the walls of a glass box.

The fold line is the line where you would fold the page to make the various drawing views come out in the proper location.

The fold line is often a dashed line as long as the part with 2 long and 2 short dashes.

A view can also be made of a surface (or plane) that is not right angles to the other views. This is helpful for a machinist setup where the part is mounted square to their cutting tools.

No matter what drawing standards say, if the drawing is not clear for its intended purpose, it must be changed in any manner needed to make it clear.

How do you draw a house without lifting your pencil?

You start out at the bottom left corner, then draw a line diagonally up to the upper right corner. Now that you're at the top, draw a straight line and end it right above the point where you started. Draw another diagonal line down to the bottom right corner, opposite the starting point. Draw a line upwards up to the top right corner, then draw a triangle above the square without lifting the pencil, and finally, draw a straight line down and then across to finish the square. There are many other ways to do this by reversing the technique, etc.

I hope this makes sense. It's difficult to explain without showing it to you.

Using your senses describe the properties of your pencil?

My pencil is a short stubby cylinder with tooth marked green paint. It has a brass crimped edged eraser holder with a pink eraser that is smudged and almost flat with the holder on one end and is smoothly pointed at the other end. It currently need sharpening as the "lead" is rounded and short.

My pencil feels smooth and familiar in my hand, except for the spots where the paint is scared from where I hold in in my teeth when I am smudging areas of my sketches that I need shaded. When I do hold it in my teeth is has a slightly dusty taste and smells of wood and pencil shavings. Right now, as I write this, the "lead" of my pencil makes a soft shushing sound as it glides across the smooth surface of this writing paper, but when I use it to sketch on rougher watercolour paper it has more of a scratching sound.

What is planometric drawing?

Planometric is yet another drawing system which gives a 3D view. It is also known as AXONOMETRIC or PLAN OBLIQUE as it is very similar to OBLIQUEdrawing in that lines are either vertical or at 45°.

The difference is that instead of the front view being a true view as in OBLIQUE; the PLAN view is the true view in PLANOMETRIC.

However the plan view is drawn at 45° and the front and side views are projected upwards from the plan. The drawing opposite shows the set up.

The red face, the top of the box, is identical to the plan and it is drawn exactly to size. It is basically a square which has been rotated through 45°.

Planometric is very popular with architects when a plan is often the most important view.

It does not however take any account of PERSPECTIVE and in this way suffers in the same way as OBLIQUE and ISOMETRIC.
