Evolution

The scientific theory according to which populations change gradually through a process of natural selection.

What island did Charles Darwin spend his time on?

In the Galápagos, Darwin visited four islands over the course of 5 weeks: Chatham (San Cristobal), Charles (Floreana), Albemarle (Isabela), and James (Santiago).

What are Aries of evolution?

fighting, killing, war'ing, and just plain do'ing.

Does every one believe in evolution if not why?

Most scientists, of course, do accept evolutionary theory as basically accurate.

A larger but still relatively small portion of the word's general populace is scientifically literate enough to be familiar with the various theories and hypotheses in evolutionary biology. The vast majority of this group tends to agree that the evidence supports evolutionary theory.

A large portion of the world's population really don't care one way or the other, and tend to go with explanations provided by the experts, if only for the reason that they assume that the experts will know what they're about.

A perhaps equally large portion of the global populace objects to evolutionary theory on religious ground, feeling that it detracts from their god or gods, and removes the human species from the special position they've ascribed to it.

Scientific name for monkey?

Macaca mullata , it is name of old world monkey also called rhesus monkey .

Does science point to creation or evolution?

Here are some arguments for Creation or against Evolution.

These point to Divine Creation:

  • The staggering complexity of every organ and every cell in the human body.
  • The vastness of our minds and emotions.
  • The fact that the universe has definite design, order, and arrangement which cannot be sufficiently explained outside a theistic worldview. (This is how Abraham, without benefit of teachers, came to reject the chaotic world-view of idolatry and the possibility of atheism). For example, theoretical physicist and popular science writer Paul Davies (whose early writings were not especially sympathetic to theism) states concerning the fundamental structure of the universe, "the impression of design is overwhelming" (Davies, 1988, p. 203).
  • The laws of the universe seem to have been set in such a way that stars, planets and life can exist. Many constants of nature appear to be finely tuned for this, and the odds against this happening by chance are astronomical.
See: More detailed evidence of Creation

Also:

1) The glaring lack of transitional fossils has been noted by the evolutionists themselves, such as this statement from the famous paleontologist and evolutionist George G. Simpson; quote: "The regular lack of transitional fossils is not confined to primates alone, but is an almost universal phenomenon."
"The lack of transitional series cannot be explained as being due to the scarcity of material. The deficiencies are real; they will never be filled" (Nilsson, N. Heribert).
"To the unprejudiced, the fossil record of plants is in favor of special creation" (Corner, E.J.H., Contemporary Botanical Thought).
2) Instances of falsifying of evidence by evolutionists, such as Haeckel's drawings, Archaeoraptor, the Cardiff "specimen," and Piltdown Man.
"Haeckel exaggerated the similarities [between embryos of different species] by idealizations and omissions, in a procedure that can only be called fraudulent. His drawings never fooled embryologists, who recognized his fudgings right from the start. The drawings, despite their noted inaccuracies, entered into the standard student textbooks of biology. Once ensconced in textbooks, misinformation becomes cocooned and effectively permanent, because textbooks copy from previous texts. We do, I think, have the right to be both astonished and ashamed by the century of mindless recycling that has led to the persistence of these drawings in a large number, if not a majority, of modern textbooks (Stephen Gould).
Dr. Jonathan Wells published a book in 2002 entitled Icons of Evolution. Dr. Wells states that the book shows that "the best-known 'evidences' for Darwin's theory have been exaggerated, distorted or even faked."

3) Creationists see the "survival of the fittest" and the dating of rock layers by fossils as being perfect tautologies.

4) The fact that some qualified, educated, normal scientists do not believe in evolution. Or at least question it, even if they still preach evolution: "Nine-tenths of the talk of evolutionists is sheer nonsense, not founded on observation and wholly unsupported by facts. This museum is full of proofs of the utter falsity of their views. In all this great museum, there is not a particle of evidence of the transmutation of species" (Dr. Etheridge, Paleontologist of the British Museum).
"To postulate that the development and survival of the fittest is entirely a consequence of chance mutations seems to me a hypothesis based on no evidence and irreconcilable with the facts. It amazes me that this is swallowed so uncritically and readily, and for such a long time, by so many scientists without murmur of protest" (Sir Ernest Chain, Nobel Prize winner).

5) The fact that there is a shared, worldwide tradition among every ancient society that the world was created.

6) Evolving of new organs or species has not been witnessed during known history.

7) Mutations are harmful, not beneficial. One of the tasks of DNA and of long-term breeding is to avoid or repair any changes brought about by mutations. This means that our genetic apparatus is programmed to resist change.

8) Mutations, even if beneficial, do not create new organs.

9) The fact that a great number of fossils have been found in the "wrong" rock-layers according to what evolutionary paleontology would require.

10) The fact that you need DNA to make DNA. No genetic code can be demonstrated to have arisen by chance, together with the ability to read that code and carry out its instructions. Information does not arise spontaneously; and there is an incredible amount of information in even the tiniest cell.
"A living cell is so awesomely complex that its interdependent components stagger the imagination and defy evolutionary explanations" (Michael Denton, author).
"The astounding structural complexity of a cell" (U.S. National Library of Medicine).
Concerning a single structure within a cell: "Without the motor protein, the microtubules don't slide and the cilium simply stands rigid. Without nexin, the tubules will slide against each other until they completely move past each other and the cilium disintegrates. Without the tubulin, there are no microtubules and no motion. The cilium is irreducibly complex. Like a mousetrap, it has all the properties of design and none of the properties of natural selection" (Michael Behe, prof. of biophysics).

11) The problem of the impossibility of abiogenesis in general. "The concept of abiogenesis is not science. It's fantasy" (J.L. Wile, Ph.D.).

12) The fact that evolution was once used as support for the belief that Blacks (or others) are less than highly-evolved humans. "Darwin was also convinced that the Europeans were evolutionarily more advanced than the black races" (Steven Rose, author). He also "reasoned that males are more evolutionarily advanced than females" (B. Kevics, author).

13. The first and second laws of thermodynamics point clearly to a Creator, since things undergo entropy rather than get more orderly over time.

14. "Radiometric techniques may not be the absolute dating methods that they are claimed to be. Age-estimates on a given geological stratum by different radiometric methods are often very different. There is no absolutely reliable long-term radiological clock. The uncertainties inherent in radiometric dating are disturbing to geologists and evolutionists." William D. Stansfield, Ph.D., Instructor of Biology, California Polytechnic State University.

15. "Even total rock systems may be open during metamorphism and may have their isotopic systems changed, making it impossible to determine their geologic age." Prof. Gunter Faure (Department of Geology, The Ohio State University, Columbus.)

16 a). At current rates of erosion the amount of sea-floor sediments actually found do not support a "billions of years" age for the Earth.
b) The amount of Sodium Chloride in the sea, also, is a small fraction of what the "old Earth" theory would postulate.
c) The Earth's magnetic field is decaying too fast to extrapolate a long age for the Earth.
d) The rate of accumulation of Moon-dust has been measured; and the amount of dust on the Moon was found to be vastly less than what scientists had predicted before the Moon-landings.

See: Problems in Evolutionary astronomy

e) Helium is generated by radioactive elements as they decay. The escape of this helium into the atmosphere can be measured. According to the Evolutionary age of the Earth there should be much more helium in the atmosphere, instead of the 0.05% that is actually there. Also see:

The explosive adaptive radiation of mammals was most likely a result of what?

Adaptive radiation is usually caused by the appearance of a very useful adaptation or the appearance of a new niche in an ecological community. Both contributed to mammals' adaptive radiation. They evolved molars with four cusps, which increased their potential diet. They were insulated by fur, allowing them to survive colder areas and colder times. And the non-avian dinosaurs became extinct, allowing mammals to take their place as the (on average) largest and most dominant organisms in many ecosystems.

What does evolution unify?

All of the biological sciences. The theory of evolution by natural selection is the backbone of biology.

How many evolutionists are there worldwide?

This question is unanswerable because "evolutionism" is not a word or an established belief system like a religion and there is no database where people submit their belief in evolution. It has been said that nearly 100% of biologists believe evolution to be fact. The main reason being that for the past 150 years, it is the only rational explanation for the diversity as well as the similarities of life. For example, the fruit fly and the mouse are obviously very different, but in a genetic experiment where the gene that makes the eyes was swapped between the two, scientists proved that the gene was the same. Another example is the fact that all mammals have the exact same number of bones.

What was the reaction from the church to the theory of evolution?

Initially it wasn't so bad. It took a while for the repurcussions to set in. Many liberal clergy did not see it as being incompatible with their faith because in reality is is not. The church wasn't so terribly dead set against it until the early mid 1900s. The scopes monkey trial was an isolated event. It wasn't until 1950 when the catholic church even commented on it. They didn't say much. And to this day, the pope supports evolution. Resistance has only come from the extreme evangelical conservative christian right that roots back to around 1960 when the modern birth of creationism took place. Since then, the evangelical right often try to make Christianity and evolution incompatible.

Why if the dinosaurs were extinct before man do ancient ruins have symbols of dinosaurs on them?

Ancient ruins do not have symbols of dinosaurs on them. Some have symbols of mythical creatures called dragons on them. It is possible that the concept of dragons developed as an attempt to explain the source of dinosaur bones known to the ancients.

How does natural selection create a change in population over time?

By favoring one variation of organism over another variation in the same population. These favored individuals ( natural selection selects individual organisms ) leave more descendants, with these traits, who over time become more numerous in the population and the populations allele frequency changes to reflect this. In a word, evolution.

Can evolution and creation coexist?

Various Opinions on the Subject
  • Yes, many people believe that god created and started the whole process and then allowed life to evolve on its own. However it is important to remember that when we say the "theory" of evolution, scientists don't mean it the way you do in your everyday life. In Science theory is an explanation for observed (i.e. observed to be true) phenomenon, it does not mean "well this could be how it works" or "this might be true". It is something that is testable, falsifiable, makes accurate predictions and has been proved. However when we say "Creationist Theory" we do mean "theory" as we use it in everyday use because the theory of Creationism is not testable and is based solely on faith.
  • No. Evolution, as defined by the American National Association of Biology Teachers, is an "unsupervised, impersonal, unpredictable, and natural process". However, Christians believe that God created the heavens and the earth and directly controls every aspect of our lives. These statements are not compatible. Now, there is a growing group of scientist that believe that one can accept evolution as scientific fact and still believe in a creator God, because science and faith are different and distinct aspects of life. Though a large amount of Christians are accepting this view, there are still those who believe that faith and reason are not mutually exclusive and that it takes just as much faith to believe in evolution as God. As one can see by looking at the many contradictory answers given on this page, the debate is by no means resolved and Christians and evolutionists are still as opposed to one another's viewpoints as before.
  • Creation and Evolution are the same thing, it's just that creation was written in a time when people didn't have the ability to understand something like evolution and how long it took to reach the stage we are now. God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th, but how long is one of God's days compared to ours. One of God's days could be a million years to us or more. As for the parts of the old testament that speaks of what God has said or done: such as Genesis; had to be bestowed on the authors of the Torah (the original Hebrew text in which the old testament was pulled from) from a higher power, because they had no way of knowing. If it said God created the world, and then all the animals in it as well as humans by starting with single celled organisms and making us evolve into marine life, then land walking mammals would have confused people in those days. Basically we weren't ready for that knowledge. Evolution is just a perfect method to make us earn our existence in this physical world God has made for us.
  • So, in a nutshell; yes, creation and evolution can coexist. Basically because; the are the same story of our history and journey as a species, they're just told differently. People need to stop taking the Bible so literally, and realize that it's not a constitution, it's more like a handbook to read and draw our own conclusions from considering when and where we are in this space and time. It was written in a way so that it could be used through the ages, no matter what changes occurred; culturally, religiously, politically, and so on and so forth.
  • Evolution and Creation coexist in the 'Intelligent Design' (ID) theory, according to which a Divine Creator created the world and the laws in it (the law of natural selection being one of them). They can also co-exist in the "theistic evolution" theory or the "BioLogos" theory.
  • The Bible says God created Adam as a man, not a baby. He also must have created stars with their light already traveling to us, otherwise there would not have been enough time yet for us to see the distant ones. I think this means that God created these things with history. e.g. if Adam had been presented to a scientist a minute after creation, the scientist would be correct if he thought that based on all the evidence, such a man must have started life as a baby and grew into an adult.

So what is harder for God- to create everything out of nothing, or to create everything out of nothing and with an inbuilt history that explains how it all came to be in accordance with the physical laws that he created too. If this is correct, He could have created man with an inbuilt history of evolution, but he could have done it all in a moment. So Evolution may just as well be a perfectly correct explanation for describing the history of man that God created. Both Creation and Evolution can be correct. None of this even requires you to question how long a day is- why can't it just be a normal, 24 hour day?

  • Well, they are now but whether it is peacefully is another issue. If you mean both can be right the no.
  • In my opinion, yes. God made everything then when something happened to his creatures he changed them.
  • Science is secular, or agnostic. It says absolutely nothing about the existence of any supernatural entities. There is no part of evolutionary theory that says God can't exist, and they two aren't at ends (just look at how many Christians accept evolution, the whole Catholic church for example)
  • The only area of science that opposes the concept of a god is in logic. Occam's Razor -- that the answer with the fewest unexplained facts, or assumptions, is probably the best one -- is the only thing standing in the way. Evolution works perfectly fine without any direct intervention from any god, needlessly saying a god had a hand in it is violating Occam's Razor, and is therefore inferior logic.

But, fortunately for theists, faith isn't based on logic.

  • There is no conflict between creationism and the theory of evolution. The conflict lies between creationists and evolutionists. Really, sometimes people just get an idea stuck in their heads, and you can't make it budge with a crowbar.
  • Of course, the two must coexist just as the natural laws of gravity exist. As living beings we are all subject to the Universal Karmic Principles which govern our environmental atmosphere. In fact, if you look closely at these words you may infer that it is the perceived value of time and distance which underlies the nature of this inquiry by the inquirer.
  • No, both can't coexist, theory of evolution couldn't be proven to be applicable to any time era, for the following reasons:

All human beings belong to one ancestor, Adam, and Adam himself was created from mud, God created Adam and Eve, who was created from Adam's left ribs, then when Adam woke up, he found her beside him, to be his partner in life after he felt so lonely.

Moreover, the result of breeding of two animals of different species if any, is indeed sterile, can't reproduce, ie, no opportunity to give chance for a new species to develop. Another thing, the ordinary 'ants' we live with now, were found to be the same as ants found in fossils million years ago.

All this leads to the conclusion that the origin of life, animals and human, is being created by God, and God alone, and that each type of animal was created separately, and that the similarity in the building block of living creatures, which is the cell, strengthens the evidence that only one creator did all that, a creator who is able to bring all this vast diversity of living creatures form one building block.

  • That depends mostly on what you mean by "Evolution". Creationists have (for the most part) no problem believing in evolution in the sense of gene frequencies changing in a population. This is called microevolution and evidence for it can be found in the Bible itself. When God separated the people at Babel, it speaks nothing of Him changing their bodies, just their languages. Because of this they could not associate and went their separate ways A few thousand years later and we find various ethnicities. This sort of evolution can lead to speciation depending on what definition of a species is being used.
  • One Important fact I think is missing is that in the defense of the creationists, when God created the world, each day he "saw that it was good" Therefore, implying that there not need be any change to any of his creation at all.

  • In my humble opinion, yes. What if God created bacteria that was capable of Evolution?

What does the Methodist church believe?

United Methodism is characterized by:

1) a democratic form of government consisting of executive (council of bishops), legislative (annual and general conferences composed of ordained clergy and lay persons) and judicial branches;

2) the right of each member to make his or her own decisions about faith, morals and practice through the use of resources such as the church and the Wesleyan quadrilateral: scripture, reason, tradition and experience;

3) a commitment to social justice and peace (although it is not a pacifist church).

Why has evolution not eliminated short sighted people?

Generally because people who are short sighted (vision - not in thought) will reproduce just like people who are not short sighted. A trait is only lost from a species if it inhibits the reproductive success of the carrier. But in the humans' social environment, people who are short sighted continue to have offspring who are short sighted as well. In other words, a standard for marriage (and other unions) is not determined by perfect eyesight.

The only way for the gene for short sightedness to be eliminated would be for those who are short sighted to be eliminated from the population.

Is a Hippo a direct descendant of dinosaurs?

No. Hippos are mammals, which are a completely separate branch of animals from the dinosaurs.

Is it possible to mix human and cockroach DNA together?

It is not possible because they are not in the same family. Can only mix DNA in ones family.

Can Earth live without humans?

yes, earth will still be alive because, it was alive when dinosuars was here and they were gone for a while then earth didn't die

What does the Bible say about vestigial structures?

I seriously doubt that the bible has anything to say about vestigial structures.

If you adhere to the bible you need to know that you do not need to treat the bible as a science text.

Why did Neanderthals have short legs?

Earlier studies suggested that the cold climate where Neanderthals lived encouraged them to be small and squat, with shorter legs than modern humans, their cousins. However, recent research suggests that short legs moved more efficiently over the hilly terrain where they lived. This adaption to their environment is also found in other species. Sheep and mountain goats have all got shorter legs than cows and gazelles that live on flatter land, even in the same climate. Among closely related species, the mountain goats had shorter legs than the lowland goats! And the mountain gazelles were shorter than their cousins, the savannah gazelles!

Evolution of mankind?

Tumai, Ardi, Lucy, H. Habilis, H. Rudolfisis, H. Erectus, H. Ergaster, H. Heidlebergensis, H. Sapiens

I over simplified this but this will give you a good start.

P.S.

The "missing link" would be H. Habilis or the one right after him. In case you wanted to know.

Why is it unlikely that natural selection will quickly reduce the frequency of hemophilia?

While the condition affects the males, it is CARRIED by the females, who do not suffer the effects of hemophilia, and can pass the disorder to THEIR female offspring.

Is Evolution a proven scientific fact or just another work of fiction over which biblical creation will prevail?

The theory of evolution is just that - a theory it is far from a proven science. For something to be considered 'scientific,' it has to be measurable and reproducible. Since it is impossible to do either with evolution, it cannot be called scientific.

The science of evolution cannot explain where the material for the "big bang" came from, essentially evolution says something came from nothing.

The science of evolution does not consider that there is or could be a spiritual world it only deals with the material world.
