The fingerprint system was put in place, reluctantly, in the metropolitan Parisian police in 1984. The criminologist Bertillon used successfully the fingerprints on Oct. 24, 1902, to bring proof against Henri-Léon Scheffer, in the murder of Reibel, a household servant during a fake burglary (the break-in was staged as the murdered had an homosexual relationship with the victim and wanted to draw attention away). Scheffer was arrested six days later and convicted to life imprisonment in a hard-labour prison. Deported to French Guiana, he died in the prison of Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, in april 1905.

What does the Immaculate Conception have to do with the South of France?

Roman Catholic AnswerOur Blessed Lady appeared in Lourdes, France and announced herself as the "Immaculate Conception".

The Immaculate Conception has been believed by the Church since very early on, the fact that when Our Blessed Lady was conceived in the womb of her mother, Anne, she was preserved from any stain of original sin. This, in the words of Pope Pius IX, "The most holy Virgin Mary, was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." This freedom from sin was entirely unmerited on her part, and a special grace, and exception to the natural law, given to her so that she would be a worthy mother to the Son of God. Pope Pius IX proclaimed this solemnly in 1854; four years later Our Blessed Lady appeared at Lourdes and announced that she was the Immaculate Conception.

Who helped frame the Declaration of Independence and helped gain support for American independence from France?

Benjamin Franklin - the most respected American of that time - helped frame the Declaration of Independence. He was one of the five members of The Committee to produce a Declaration. (The other members were John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston.) Some scholars believe that Franklin was asked to write the Declaration and that he turned it down. Why? Because his "writing was not to be edited."Franklin was the most outspoken of the anti-slavery delegates and he would have included that clause in the Declaration. Franklin and Adams chose Jefferson to write the Declaration. Besides being an excellent writer, Jefferson was a slave owner from Virginia and this was politically important! If slavery was to be abolished in July of 1776, it would have to be proposed by a Southerner. When Jefferson finished his 1st draft of the Declaration, he immediately took it to Franklin who edited it! The clause of abolishing slavery went to Congress, but the Southern colonies/states would have no part of it and it was deleted from the signed Declaration. Franklin reminded Adams and other Northern anti-slavery delegates that the issue at hand was independence from Britain - not abolishing slavery. The issue of slavery could be brought up later. (And was it ever!) Franklin also gained the support of the French monarchy in the way of French troops and money that was instrumental in the American defeat of the British. How ironic that Franklin's influence of seeking "equal rights for all men" would be the later rallying cry for the French Revolution and the death knell for the French king and queen. - Brad Watson 5/28/09 11:01 MiamiWorldPerc@netzero.com
