I have been in the same position for a long time but I recently solved it. The way to do it is not to directly tell them, but to drop small hints. Stop hanging out with them as much, ignore most of they're messages and calls, and make better friends with other friends you have. Then he/she shall get the hints and realize that you don't like them. Heres some more things you can do:
- Spend less time with them
- Ignore messages/calls
- Make other friends
- Stop inviting them to things
- Don't come to the things they've invited you to
- Get them smaller/no presents for they're birthday
