You may also want to chang the regular light blubs to the recycle bulbs that way you may lessen the light pollution. So, yes, New York City is pretty dirty (although it is not the dirtiest city in the U.S.). But I think it's mostly the air, and the surrounding rivers, that are dirty. New York City is polluted, but, in terms of like, dirty sidewalks and garbage/litter on the streets, New York is very clean. Sometimes you see an overturned garbage can spilling trash all over the street, or a garbage bag on the curb that has been torn open by rodents. But overall, there is not much litter on the streets, and the streets and sidewalks are pretty clean (not encrusted with filth and foul-smelling gunk).
India has a poorly developed infrastructure to handle waste, therefore most industrial, commercial and residential waste from towns and cities along the Ganges ends up in the water. It is also cheaper to simply dump it in the river than to pay to have it hauled away and disposed of.
