If I have my bachelor's degree in English what else do I need to become an x-ray technician?

The following is written by and according to the U.S. Department of Labor and particular to the education and training required for a X-Ray Technician. Preparation for this profession is offered in hospitals, colleges and universities, and less frequently at vocational-technical institutes. Hospitals employ most radiologic technologists. Employers prefer to hire technologists with formal training. Education and training. Formal training programs in radiography range in length from 1 to 4 years and lead to a certificate, an associate degree, or a bachelor's degree. Two-year associate degree programs are most prevalent. Some 1-year certificate programs are available for experienced radiographers or individuals from other health occupations, such as medical technologists and registered nurses, who want to change fields. A bachelor's or master's degree in one of the radiologic technologies is desirable for supervisory, administrative, or teaching positions. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology accredits most formal training programs for the field. The committee accredited more than 600 radiography programs in 2007. Admission to radiography programs require, at a minimum, a high school diploma or the equivalent. High school courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology are helpful. The programs provide both classroom and clinical instruction in anatomy and physiology, patient care procedures, radiation physics, radiation protection, principles of imaging, medical terminology, positioning of patients, medical ethics, radiobiology, and pathology. Licensure. Federal legislation protects the public from the hazards of unnecessary exposure to medical and dental radiation by ensuring that operators of radiologic equipment are properly trained. Under this legislation, the Federal Government sets voluntary standards that the States may use for accrediting training programs and licensing individuals who engage in medical or dental radiography. In 2007, 40 states required licensure for practicing radiologic technologists and technicians. Certification and other qualifications. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) offers voluntary certification for radiologic technologists. In addition, 35 States use ARRT-administered exams for State licensing purposes. To be eligible for certification, technologists generally must graduate from an accredited program and pass an examination. Many employers prefer to hire certified radiographers. To be recertified, radiographers must complete 24 hours of continuing education every 2 years. Radiologic technologists should be sensitive to patients' physical and psychological needs. They must pay attention to detail, follow instructions, and work as part of a team. In addition, operating complicated equipment requires mechanical ability and manual dexterity. Advancement. With experience and additional training, staff technologists may become specialists, performing CT scanning, MR, and angiography, a procedure during which blood vessels are x rayed to find clots. Technologists also may advance, with additional education and certification, to become a radiologist assistant. Experienced technologists also may be promoted to supervisor, chief radiologic technologist, and, ultimately, department administrator or director. Depending on the institution, courses or a master's degree in business or health administration may be necessary for the director's position. Some technologists progress by specializing in the occupation to become instructors or directors in radiologic technology programs; others take jobs as sales representatives or instructors with equipment manufacturers. No, though a tube or metal wrapper will. X-rays and magnometers do not illuminate organic material.

Why should x-ray film never be used past expiration date?

Depending storage conditions, - ie. stored in a dry, dark, cool place or frozen - old x-ray film can be used passed their expiry date, but I wouldn't recommend it for diagnostic purposes. The image result is usually non diagnotic because the emulsion deterioration produces brown/green tinted images, blotches, or no image at all.

Do you get vacation time when you are an x ray tech?

It depends on your boss

It depends on the terms of your employment. If you work for a company, you most likely will have paid vacation. If you are a contractor, you make your own arrangements.

Do you own your dental x rays?

Technically, yes, you do. You've paid for them. But the dental practice CAN charge you administrative costs for preparing them and turning them over to you. When moving and/or changing dentists I've never had a problem with the old dentist sending them to the new dentist.

How do you become an x-ray technician in the Navy?

You must first first visit your local recruiter and apply for Hospital Corpsman School. It is recommended you do this prior to signing any contract or scheduling for a Physical examination.

Upon completion of a physical exam, and basic training. You then must attend Hospital Corpsman "A" school. Upon completion of this schooling, you may be eligible to continue directly on to Basic X-ray Technician NEC 8451 school. This is dependant on how your contract is written up from your recruiter when you enlisted. Sometimes top performers in Hospital Corpsman "A" school are allowed to continue on to Basic X-ray Technician school directly from Hospial Corps "A" School.

If you are not eligible from "A" school to continue on into the "C" school of Basic X-ray technology, you then are assigned to a command as a Hospital Corpsman, and you may apply for Basic X-ray School after 18 months of Duty at your assigned command. This could be a hospital, ship, clinic, Marine Corps assignment, etc.

If you are accepted into Basic X-Ray technology "C" School you will then attend an 18 month course in San Diego, CA. Upon completion you will be assigned another command as a basic x-ray tecnician. After another 18 months are you eligible to apply for Advanced X-ray Technology "C" school.

After completing this 24 month course you are eligible to take the National Registry Exam with the ARRT. This is the full accreditation process for a Navy X-ray technologist that is recognized in the civilian sector after leaving the military. The process can take up to 4-5 years.

Having completed this process myself I hope this information helps you with your decision.

Is there a way to determine the degree of Scoliosis curvature without the use of x rays?

Not really, no. They use the x-rays along with the cobb angle method to evaluate curves.

When assessing a curve the apical vertebra is first identified; this is the most likely displaced and rotated vertebra with the least tilted end plate.

Will x-ray technicians be replaced in the future?

I do not think it will become totally possible to replace x-ray technologists due to the very nature of their work. Robots cannot do some patient care tasks.

Can airport x-ray machines damage Video VHS tapes?

I am sure the x ray machines do demagnetize tapes. I bought hi8 tapes for my cam corder (2 sets) and all of them were demagnetized by the time I got from St. Louis to Tennerife. I was pissed I even asked security if they would be fine and they assured me they would. LIARS! lol I didn't get to make videos for my kids to see and of family there for other family to see I was angry. So my advice is to NOT take them. This year I am looking for a container that will keep them safe. Any ideas are appreciated.

Are LPN nurses allowed to have tattoos due to metalic ink and x rays?

First of all, modern tattoos, while using some inks that contain metals, have such low levels of metal that it would be unlikely to be affected/affect medical equipment. Metal would have no impact on X-rays whatsoever, I believe your concern is more related to MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) which employs strong magnets. Tattoos done at tattoo parlors should not be affected by these machines, but tattoos done crudely at home or in prison may contain high levels of metal that can cause serious harm.

What are the chemicals used in extraction of silver from x-rays?

X-rays are a form radiation, and you can't extract silver from that.

But X-ray plates or slides, for those places that still use wet processing, do contain silver which can be extracted. Don't know how though.

How much radiation does a x ray tech get a year?

It depends on the specific assignment of the tech, and on the respect of security standards by the technologist and by the state of the equipment and facilities being used.

A poorly trained, sloppy individual in a poorly maintained facility will be exposed unduly. A well trained individual observing careful technique in a good facility will not be exposed to much, if any, radiation. It's all in the details.
