Remove the complete wiper assembly from the bottom of the windshield. This will give you room to remove the alternator.

Remove the Negative (black) battery terminal while the vehicle is running and if the vehicle dies then it's the alternator, if it stays running then it's the battery. Although this method isn't guaranteed it's usually accurate. DO NOT REMOVE THE POSITIVE terminal (red) from the battery while it's running. It could cause a spark and make the battery explode. Another way is to drive to Autozone or Advanced Auto and ask them to test it. They'll do it for free.

I had this problem what you need to do is remove the half shaft to get this out because there is no room to get it past this point. Sorry for the bad news.

the car has the original alternator in it, the brackets for the new alternator (the ford one) are uneven and wont fit the belts on them, i was wondering if i can take the brackets from the old alternator and replace them on the for so the belts will fit answer quickly thanks!

JACK THE CAR UP, REMOVE THE NEGATIVE WIRE CABLE FROM THE BATTERY, REMOVE THE PASSENGER SIDE TIRE AND THE FRONT INNER FENDER (PLASTIC). ONCE THESE ARE REMOVED THERE ARE ONLY 2 BOLTS AND ITS OUT. BUT, IT CAN BE FINANGLED THROUGH THE ENGINE BAY WITHOUT REMOVAL OF EITHER BUT ITS A TIGHT FIT.

most of the work can be done under the hood but there is a bolt low and under the back ot the alt. that u have to take out the dog house to get at pull the seats all the way back two bolts on the floor and two latchs on top the dog house has to be rolled out top first pull back tensioner & remove belt can't remember if 2 or 3 bolts in front of alt. just take your time the dog house gave me the biggest fits

You will need a large adjustable wrench for the belt tensioner and a sized wrench to take off the three bolts of the actuator. Disconnect the battery wires at the battery, no need to try and shock you. Use the large wrench to pull back the self adjusting belt tensioner arm holding the main belt. The arm is on a spring and just needs to be moved to release the tension on the belt so you can take the belt off the alternator. Take out the three bolts holding the alternator in. Remove the wire harness and ground going to the alternator and exchange with new alternator. Repeat instructions in reverse to put the new alternator back in.

10.9 Armature Reaction in Alternator

When an alternator is running at no-load, there will be no current flowingthrough the armature winding. The flux produced in the air-gap will be only dueto the rotor ampere-turns. When the alternator is loaded, the three-phase currentswill produce a totaling magnetic field in the air-gap. Consequently, the air-gapflux is changed from the no-load condition.The effect of armature flux on the flux produced by field ampere-turns (i. e.,rotor ampere-turns) is called armature reaction.Two things are worth noting about the armature reaction in an alternator. First,the armature flux and the flux produced by rotor ampere-turns rotate at the samespeed (synchronous speed) in the same direction and, therefore, the two fluxesare fixed in space relative to each other. Secondly, the modification of flux inthe air-gap due to armature flux depends on the magnitude of stator current andon the power factor of the load. It is the load power factor which determineswhether the armature flux distorts, opposes or helps the flux produced by rotorampere-turns. If the battery checks out okay, you can replace just the voltage regulator inside the alternator.

There isn't an alternator fuse. The alternator is the power source - it's not fed from another power source. That wire which goes to the positive terminal of the battery is there to transfer electrical power to the battery, not from it.

I would check the maximum current produced by the alternator then check charts to see what gauge wire is needed. As a general rule, I would start with #4 AWG copper. As wire size decreases, the resistance of the wire increases and more heat is generated in the wire. Also as resistance increases, the voltage at the other end decreases due to voltage drop in the wire.

V6 4Runner has a 14mm bolt on the top of the alternator and a 12mm bolt on the bottom of the alternator.

Loosen both of these bolts.

Look through the drivers side wheel well and you will see another 12mm bolt below the alternator. This is your tension adjustment bolt. Tighten or loosen as needed.

After proper tension is achieved tighten the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts you loosened earlier.

Most of the alternators have their pole-shoes slotted for receiving copper bars of a grid or damper winding (also known as squirrel- cage winding).the copper bars are short-circuited at both ends heavy copper rings. these dampers are useful in preventing the hunting9momentary speed fluctuations) in generators and needed in synchronous motors to provide the starting torque. Turbo- generators usually do not have these damper windings(except in special case to assist in synchronizing) because the solid field-poles themselves act as efficient dampers. It should be clearly understood that under normal running conditions, damper winding does not carry any current because rotor runs at synchronous speed.

The damper winding also tents to maintain balanced 3-phase voltage under unbalanced load conditions.

The alternator may either drain a battery while sitting if the diodes in the rectifier leak current (like a check valve) or may just not maintain the system load while your engine is running. (not keep up to the demand/not charge at all)

It is dangerous because with capacitive load line voltage will increase which cause the line voltage difference and it will not satisfy the parallel operation of the same voltage rating.

Its kinda hard and takes some time.. dont knwo the specifics but i did it and you have to take off the belt that goes to the alt by losening the tensioner pulley i think its an 8 or 10 mm then disconnect the batter neg cable (black) and undo all wiring from alt. then remove hold down bolts and re-verse procedure to install, might be a good time to change alt belt too and make sure its tight but not too tight, about 1/4 inch play when pushing down on it

The Drivers side right under the power steering pump at the front of the engine. Seems best to remove the radiator first to save some time or go under the front with the proper ratchet and/or wrench.

could be voltage regulator or sometimes the alternators from the store are bad best thing to do is have them test it before you leave the store or even purchase it you should look for a problem outside the alternator. if you replaced it with a decent rebuilt or new and are still having problems check the battery, battery cables and your ground cables. Make sure your battery is secure and nothing can short across the terminals. This can burn out the regulators. Check your belt tension as well if it is loose the alternator pully might not spin properly.
