The cartoon from the bank war in 1832 portrays President Jackson as a king to criticize his increasingly authoritarian and unilateral actions. It suggests that he was acting more like a monarch than a democratic leader by abusing his power and disregarding the checks and balances of the government. General Andrew Jackson was in charge of defending New Orleans from an assault by the British. Several of his actions before any conflict were not popular. Jackson imposed strict martial law on the city of New Orleans. This civil unrest was made more complicated by Baratarian pirates led by jean Lafitte. Because Jackson needed all the troops he could find, he reached an agreement with Lafitte to help defend New Orleans. Lafitte had been offered a deal by the British but considered it to be too small, and turned the British offers down.
