Excellent question. There are many complex factors in inflammation that make it a very important function of the body. It involves mostly the endocrine system and tissue hormones called prostaglandins and the immune and lymph system and release of chemicals like histamine and and kinins.

The reason that it is painful is also just as complex. But to put it in simple terms just imagine having a water balloon. If you fill it up just to regular size, it looks pretty good and does the things like shaking and wiggling like you would expect. You can overdose on pain medicine ... and Advil brand of ibuprofen is hard on your stomach, which is why Celebrex is better (less stomach upset and stronger)

two words: ice cup. Take a small dixie cup fill it 3/4 full and freeze. Unwrap the cup so the ice is exposed, and in small circular motion go from the front of the shoulder to the top where you feel the pointy bone. This may not be has effective as aspirin but it helps. Do the massage for a minimum of 10 minutes no longer than 20 minutes. Do it 2 to 4 times a day. by the way, this is not fun. It will Hurt and burn in the begining.
