In what US state do public school teachers earn the most money?

U.S. Highest Pay Rate By State For Teachers:
  • There is a large debate going on about how much teachers get paid (many get paid more than many other professionals and teachers work fewer hours for the money they get.) Some will feel that teachers get paid too much, while others feel they are not paid enough. One must keep in mind that the U.S. Government (and how strange, also Canada) paid out $80 million for education with the slogan 'no child left behind', but unfortunately many schools are over looked especially in the poor, black sectors of certain states. With teachers salaries so high it is basically taken out on the students and the tools they need to function in class. Often schools are in poor repair as are the equipment students may use. The Detroit metropolitan area has the highest average public school teacher pay among metropolitan areas for which data are available, at $47.28 per hour, followed by the San Francisco metropolitan area at $46.70 per hour, and the New York metropolitan area at $45.79 per hour.
  • First of all I would like to respond to this "answer" because I am in fact a teacher in the city of Detroit. I would like to say that I ONLY make $16.00 and hour and the teachers are all on a set salary schedule. I would also like to comment on the fact that teacher's are not over paid and anyone who thinks that does not value education. We live in a society that constantly pushes our youth to advance their education. Occupations such as lawyers and doctors are payed very well. However we forget to look at who helped those individuals get where they are- TEACHERS. In my opinion the 3 most high payed careers should be teachers, doctors and police officers. People are teachers not because of "how much they make", but because of what they make, such as the fact that we make children do things that they never thought they were capable of doing. Everyday I help the children that everyone else has lost hope in. I make those child believe in themselves and to me that is the best anyone can get out of a job. The next time you think about how much a teacher makes, realize that teachers don't measure in dollars, we measure in smiles!
  • By no means is anyone putting most teachers down. Some work hard, but some don't. Some are dedicated and want to really teach the students, while some don't and it's very evident by the grammar and spelling that one sees in high school students today. One asks themselves how on earth these students managed to pass grammar and spelling. Teachers have the opportunity to advance themselves for higher pay, but, to be fair instead of giving many teachers fair pay for the subject they are teaching or the quality in which they are teaching it's the senior teachers that make the most money. Please go to this site for Teacher's Pay (each State is different): http://www.aft.org/presscenter/releases/2004/salary_map.htm
  • Teachers cannot teach grammar and spelling anymore because it is not in the district pacing guide, district based common assessments, and is not covered on the state tests. All the tests focus on is read and answer, so they do not get instruction in grammar anymore. No more spelling or handwriting either. At least that is the way it is in Kansas. With so much student debt from getting my degree and now having to get a Masters degree just to get a decent raise (which doesn't even count now since there is a salary freeze for the next two years), every dollar raise I get will just go back to paying off school debt to get the raise. The top you can make in Kansas is around $60,000 dollars, but that is with a Doctorate degree and 15+ years of experience. I teach because I love my students and being a part of their development, but sometimes of the end of the day you feel incredibly under-appreciated for all the blood, sweat, and tears you put in day in and day out.
