First of all, it is always convenient to use a SYNTHETIC OIL in turbocharged engines, due to their superior performance at the elevated temperatures inside the turbine side of the turbocharger. By SYNTHETIC oil, a 100% SYNTHETIC is the only valid one (So called "SEMI SYNTHETIC" oils can have a little percentage of real SYNTHETIC with the rest being a MINERAL oil, and still be sold as they say, but a Turbocharged engine could fail miserably by trying to foolishly save some dollars, risking the Turbo or the whole engine.

Next, the viscosity grade should match the ambient temperatures where the vehicle will be operated. In moderate climates, a 5W-50 oil will provide the best load protection, since this Turbocharged engines put a large load on the rod bearings and crankshaft bearings. But in colder climates a 5W-50 oil could be slightly too thick, in which case a 5W-30 grade will provide a viscosity low enough to provide adequate lubrication in a very cold morning. Some people demand a "Fuel Saving" type oil, specially formulated to reduce friction. This is not always a good idea in Turbo or Supercharged engines. Finally, a Turbo engine user should always care for their engine: NEVER accelerate the engine just before shutting down. Let the engine temperature stabilize after a high speed run for at least 2 minutes at idle before shutting down. The engine takes 5 and 1/2 quarts of Castrol Syntec 10w30 for best performance... or other viscosity oil depending on climate conditions- refer to owners manual for that. FRAM oil filter is PH2870A... or find a K&N or other brand for highest quality. after change make sure to check the oil level

The thermostat is electronically controlled, and if faulty will set off the cel. it is located on the drivers side of the engine block, directly beneath the intake manifold.

Actually, this A4 only has a high pressure port. The Walmart / Autozone kits should really only be used with a low pressure port. I would find a someone that works on VWs.

What I did was to get a low presure pipe with the valve in the junker, cut the valve leaving 1-1/2" of pipe in both sides of the valve, then I open the pipe in half, make a hole in the low pressure pipe and clamp the low valve with hose clamps, I use a rubber hose as a seal. recharge system and done. Works perfect.

1. Take off accessory belt

2. Take off belt tensioner (provides much more room to work with, I have big hands)

3. Unscrew cooling fan (bottom alternator bolt will not come out with fan in place)

4. Uncrew top and bottom bolts

5. Unscrew rear nut, detach clip.

6. Check which alternator you have, will most likely be a bosch 90amp or valeo 120amp.

7. Get new part and put it all back together.

Always good idea the change the transmission fluids every 2-5 years or so. The torsen-quattro doesn't require maintenance unless it's dripping oil out.

Sell the car. Can't defeat it. It drives me insane and I've asked everywhere.

could be alot of things but you could check oil level. it the car has high millage could be the piston rings are worn and oil is getting by. one thing to try if the car is older put in heavier weight oil..........Good Luck
