Bird Flu

Questions and answers related to H5N1 Bird Flu (Avian Flu). It is an extremely virulent influenza virus that can infect birds, occasionally pigs, rarely infections in other animals, and very rarely humans. Fortunately, it does not spread very easily, and only extremely rare human to human transmissions have been known to occur. No instance of the virus spreading beyond a first generation of close human contacts has been reported. It does, however, have a very high mortality rate in animals and in humans (60% death rate in humans).

Is there anything to prevent gangrene from spreading?

gangrene can be resolved by some disinfectent spray and be sure to rape it up

How did the avian flu become a human virus opposed to a animal virus?

A virus can easily mutate, and the process of evolution leads organisms to adapt to new ecological niches; humans are just a new niche for a virus. Because people are often in contact with birds (particularly birds such as chickens, ducks, & geese which we eat) we are in a position to pick up viruses from them.

Why dont humans cats dogs and birds all get the different viral infections?

I think its because viruses cab get passed down from human to animals and also viruses are contagious.

Is bird flu considered armed and dangerous?

Yes. It is armed and dangerous but, thankfully, it doesn't do well with transport and logistics. 50 - 60 % of those who contract avian flu (bird flu) die of the viral infection. So it is armed to the hilt. But it doesn't spread easily from human to human.

As we know, H1N1/09 swine flu traveled the world in short order to become a pandemic, with every nation impacted. Bird flu, H5N1, is still a rare form of influenza in humans, and so far there have been only a few cases that transferred from person to person, and then only through very close contact. It is spread to humans by wild birds and poultry, and their saliva or feces. It has remained, so far, in a rather small portion of the world, infectious disease organizations, like the World Health Organization (WHO) track this disease carefully.

Now, talking of armed and dangerous, consider if there were to be a reassortant (mutation) that combined H5N1 bird flu and H1N1 swine flu together! That was a concern of epidemiologists when the "easily transferred from person to person H1N1" began to rapidly spread to locations with history of avian flu. If these viruses mutated together, they could form a virus capable of very fast spread along with extremely high mortality rates.

Do birds stay in the position they die in?

that depends if it was flying.... if it was flying and died it wouldn't stay in the air....

if it died at a slaughterhouse it wouldn't because it wouldn't die in a plastic bag....

hope it helped

What do you do if you've had to flu for 5 days and its getting worse?

If you've had the flu for five days and your symptoms are worsening, it's important to seek medical attention. Contact your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and determine if you need further evaluation or treatment. In the meantime, make sure to rest, stay hydrated, and manage symptoms with over-the-counter medications as needed. If you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion, seek emergency care immediately.

What does bird flu eat?

Bird flu doesn't eat anything. It's just a virus that affects birds, making them really sick.

Is it rare for bird flu to make people sick?

To date it has been rare for bird flu to make people sick. However the virus can evolve and when a human infection happens, there is always a strong chance that the virus will mutate and we will get human to human infection. For this reason, if bird flu is suspected in a population of domestic birds these are all destroyed.

If you have both flu and cold symptoms what do you have?

You could have either a cold or the flu or both. Or, you could have allergies. See the related questions for information about the symptoms of cold and flu.

How did Avian Flu affect human society in the 21st century?

When avian flu was first discovered in the human population, the immediate response was to restrict travel It had an effect on trade and commerce due to restrictions to help contain the flu. This resulted in a negative impact on the economy.

How does bird flu affect birds immune system?

Avian influenza virus doesn't directly affect the immune systems of birds - it is a respiratory infection. However, in response to an infection with avian influenza, the bird's immune system will ramp up production of antibodies against the virus as well as activate natural killer cells that will destroy cells infected with the virus.

Symptoms of bird flu in birds:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Avian Flu in Birds:

Avian influenza is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. The disease occurs worldwide. While all birds are thought to be susceptible to infection with avian influenza viruses, many wild bird species carry these viruses with no apparent signs of harm.

Other bird species, including domestic poultry, develop disease when infected with avian influenza viruses. In poultry, the viruses cause two distinctly different forms of disease - one common and mild, the other rare and highly lethal. In the mild form, signs of illness may be expressed only as ruffled feathers, reduced egg production, or mild effects on the respiratory system. Outbreaks can be so mild they escape detection unless regular testing for viruses is in place.

In contrast, the second and far less common highly pathogenic form is difficult to miss. First identified in Italy in 1878, highly pathogenic avian influenza is characterized by sudden onset of severe disease, rapid contagion, and a mortality rate that can approach 100% within 48 hours. In this form of the disease, the virus not only affects the respiratory tract, as in the mild form, but also invades multiple organs and tissues.

What is a candidate vaccine?

When new vaccines are being needed, they are created by drug companies that are approved to develop vaccines by the governments, who have pre-ordered the vaccines, making the drug companies want to manufacture them.

The health ministries of the countries and the World Health Organization, etc. help the drug companies find the strain of virus or type of bacteria or other microbe that will be the best match for the microbe that they are wanting to protect the public against with a vaccination. They determine what the best matched strains are that are circulating in the population or are expected to be circulating in the next flu season, and often provide the "seed stock" of that microbe to the drug companies.

Once the drug companies have grown the virus/bacteria, etc. and then killed or weakened it so it can not make anyone sick, they put it into a solution for injection. They then have a vaccine that is a candidate for the governments to approve so they can fulfill the orders they have received.

They present documentation to describe what it in it, how it was made, etc. to the government approval agencies. The drug companies and government agencies work together to conduct human trials and determine the safety and efficacy of the candidate vaccines.

Once the approval groups within the governments, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) in Europe/UK, have all the information about the candidate vaccines, they study the documentation and test results and select those candidate vaccines that they approve for use in their countries, and then the chosen vaccines are called approved vaccines instead of candidate vaccines.

Is there a new strain of bird flu H7N9 killing people in Shanghai?

Yes, on Easter Day 2013, reports came out of the first known human victims of a rare strain of bird flu (H7N9), which was not known to have infected humans before. Tests identified this strain of bird flu as the strain that has now killed two men in Shanghai, China. A third person in China,a woman from Chuzhou, was also found to be infected with this strain of "bird flu" influenza virus. She is reported to be in critical condition. These three did not infect each other or any close contacts.

The previously identified Bird flu strain that can infect humans (H5N1) typically is not spread from human to human. It is contracted directly from infected birds and poultry, therefore, human victims have been rare. There have been only 360 confirmed human deaths from H5N1 since 2003 world wide, although hundreds of millions of birds died in the same period.

The two men, one aged 87 and the other only 27, and the woman, age 25, reported symptoms of coughs and fever which quickly turned to pneumonia, and then eventually death for the two men.

There is no vaccine available for the H7N9 bird flu strain. There was a human vaccine developed for the H5N1 strain, however, it has not been used or made available commercially so far. It is kept in stockpile in the US in case it should mutate to become more easily transmitted to and among humans and to be ready in case of a need for its use.

How many people died in the Indonesia Tsunami?

The Asian tsunami of 2004 had a death toll of over 230,000 people. Over 167,000 people in Indonesia died as a result. The series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian ocean killed over 230,000 people in fourteen countries. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia was the hardest hit, followed by Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.

How do you prevent spread of bird flu in case some chickens are infected?

You would need to completely quarantine the chickens from all other birds, including wild birds. You also need to make sure you don't carry the virus from the infected birds to non-infected birds - most commercial poultry growers have "all-in, all-out" processes with strict biosecurity including showering before and after entering a barn and a complete change of clothes, including hair ties and shoes. You must also completely clean and sanitize all equipment and facilities that come into contact with the infected birds.
