BP Oil Spill

This is an ongoing event. My answers are given to the best of the current information as of 12:30 pm, on May 20. Oil continues to flow from the Maconda well. BP has not provided any estimate of the oil flow rate but on May 18, stated that approximately 2,000 BOPD was being captured by the insert tube.

NOAA made a preliminary estimate of 5,000 barrels/ day. Given 30 days since the blowout to May 17, total volume would be 150,000 barrels of oil, and 2 days at 3,000 BOPD would make it 156,000 barrels to May 20. Could be a lot more as noted by some experts. It would be difficult to consider it less than 100,000 barrels given the current flow out the insert tube.

The big question is how much additional oil will be spilled. That depends on whether the top kill effort is successful.

There are many different things that are considered "oils". For the most part, an oil is: hydrophobic (is repelled by water / doesn't mix with water), a liquid at 25°C, and is soluble in (mixes with) organic solvents.

How 'heavy' something is is determined by density. One way to describe the density of a liquid is by giving its 'specific gravity', which means how heavy is it compared to water. The specific gravity of water is 1, so any oil with a specific gravity greater than 1 will sink in water, while any oil with a specific gravity lower than 1 will float on water.

Water is denser than oil because strong forces of hydrogen bonding are present in between the water molecules so that are very close to each other and thus water has high density. While on the other hand in oil long chains of hydrogen and carbon are present, oil is non polar so the chains of carbon and hydrogen are far apart and do not attract each other. Thus oil is less denser than water and floats on water.

The concept of density can be understood by the thing that one tonne of oil and one tonne of water has equal weight but one tone of oil occupies more space than one tonne of water as water molecules are present very close to one another or in other words water is more dense than oil.

I have worked through many tropical storms and Hurricanes. If the threat shows the track going over the theme parks then they will close for safety reasons. If you are staying at their resorts they will compensate your stay some what but not much. They will try and keep amenities for food open but that's all. It usually has lasted only a night but on occasion it was 2 days. Then the parks are yours and the lines are usually a walk on, everywhere. I love going after a storm because of that. Rain is the biggest hurdle so take a poncho. The airports are worse because they will close long before we do at the parks and wont open as quickly. The restaurants and hotels usually have short term closures as well. When the storm is here everything is closed by about 6 hours before it hits land and then another 6 after it leaves. So a 24 hour period of nothing going on is the worse, but you do get bragging rights to surviving a hurricane!
