There are many new engines that would fit inside your older model camaro however I would not advise you to try it. the reasons for this are that newer model engines are virtually driven by their sensors and computers because of this older model cars computer and pulgins would not fit a newer engine example: if you were to install a 6.0L 2008 Chevy SS v8 in your 96 Camaro the Airflow Sensors and Computer settings as well as your computers current settings would not sync up it would take a huge effort to replace the computer and wiring in your vehicle and a great deal of programming to enable it to perform at its proper level. You would likely spend more money on the computer, wiring, and engine installation and troubleshooting than if you purchased a 2010 camaro. But all is not lost if you are looking to upgrade performance and be competitive with the newer car market vehicles you have many options available for your 90's camaro that would make is a sound bit faster than even the new camaro SS's heres a few engines you might want to look into that wont involve nearly the work and cost of the procedure we just went over. Edelbrock is a performance Mogul and they love building engines for Chevy cars a few options are.

A 327 High Performance V8 at around 310-340Hp ranges

A 350 High Performance V8 at around 320-380Hp ranges

A 383 Stroker V8 at around 335- 400 Hp Ranges

(all of those three would be fairly inexpensive and easy install jobs)

A 400 Block V8 varying in HP

A 427 Aluminum After Market Engine usually around 400-450HP

A 454 Big Block SS After Market Usally around 420-470HP

A 468 Big Block After Market around 440-500HP

(All of those would be more difficult and expensive replacements)

A 502 Super Block (Mostly used in professional Drag Racing) at around 500-600HP

(This would require some extensive cutting of the firewall and wheel wells and would be much harder to do)

As a last word of advice Bigger is not always better in many cases the kind of performance you need can be acheived in a smaller V8 without cutting up your car my personal 1998 Camaro SS has a 350 SS with a Supercharger it was rated at 325 HP from the factory but with the supercharger and other performance modifications ive made for around 8000$ Total it dynos at 433 HP witch is 10 more HP than the brand new 2010 SS and my car weighs about 900lbs less so im fairly certain it would smoke a new SS any day. In a Nissan Sentra I had similar problem. Trouble was the steering column mounted on / off switch for the headlamps. Turns out it is a pretty complex switch and the wiring diagram at the dealer revealed that it was connected to the dash lights and other interior lights. About a $75 gamble to see if I had read the diagram correctly, and, praise the Lord, I had. Replacing that turn signal / Headlights on/off switch deal fixed it immediately.

You buy a different engine. A V8 (8 cylinders instead of 6)! Buy a new v8 engine from a parts supplier. You can buy a LS series engine, a small-block, or a big-block from many suppliers. You may also need to pay to have it installed if you can't do it yourself.

P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected. A random misfire code can be set on newer vehicles with OBD II onboard diagnostics when multiple misfires occur randomly in multiple cylinders. The cause is typically a vacuum leak in the intake manifold, throttle body or vacuum plumbing, a defective Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve that is leaking exhaust into the intake manifold, or even bad gasoline. Less common causes include bad spark plug wires, worn or fouled spark plugs, a weak ignition coil, dirty fuel injectors, low fuel pressure, or weak valve springs. If a misfire is occurring in only one or two cylinders, you will usually find a misfire code for that specific cylinder rather than a random misfire code.

engine swaps are really quite simple. all you need is the new engine, proper motor mounts, probably a different transmission (the 350 in passenger cars usually is an automatic transmission, i had problems with my 87 camaro sport on this) and if you get really unlucky, you may need to get a different driveline (im not sure if the one in the newer camaro is the proper length, someone else might know). just make sure to get all your electronics connected properly, and you may have a problem with the speedometer unless you get a transmission with an electrical speedometer connection.
