Manga is the child of books and movies. The benefit to movies is that there are some emotions that are hard to express through writing and are better felt through facial expressions.

The benefit to books is that there are some things that are easier to understand if they are written down. Manga has both.

Granted, most manga series are really good if you look for the one that interest you the most.
