Manga is in general more of a story, whereas comic books are more a bunch of mini stories.
Some certain manga are not only for children (such as Detective Conan --also known as Case Closed, by Gosho Aoyama) and are fun to read while still educational-- in a way, the information you learn rubs off on you-- while comic books are for children and basically only teach people about justice and all that. It's good stuff to learn, I admit, but learning about how to think is, I believe, more important.
