Just so you know, macs can get viruses. I actually witnessed one first hand before! Personally, I perfer Windows over Mac. Windows 7 was the best OS I have ever had. I believe they are much faster than Macs. Here are a list of pros and cons for both OS. (P.S Linux's stock is terrible!)

When buying a computer, you should expect and demand, a sturdy high quality product and good customer service. Big computer companies have trouble with both, but smaller ones (some at least) excel in both of those aspects.

The question here is very vague. An outdated computer could be a computer that you could buy today... However I assume this question is targeted towards a computer that is a few years old in which case the value of the computer is based off of the hardware. Generally if you paid a few thousand dollars for the unit 5 years ago it may have some worth but not to much as you can buy a new computer for 200-300 dollars. But once again without the hardware makeup it is hard to say its actual worth.
As technology continues to advance at such a rapid rate. Most computers are generally outdated in a matter of 3 years. After 3 years, your computer is worth zero to most resellers or buyers. Your best option is to take it to electronics recycling place and recoup $5-$20 depending on how much you are recycling. Or try to sell any individual components or upgrades that may still hold some value.
Personaly I have always found buying a desktop computer the best way to go. You can upgrade them when you get the chash later and if something breaks down and needs to be replaced. You don't have to send things away. Most Dells are made with refurbished parts to keep down prices and I have had bad luck with Compaq in the past. Try getting a quote or 2 from a local computer shop. They can built you a computer for EXACTLY what you need at your bottom price. In many cases they will even repair free of charge if something goes wrong and it wasn't even their fault. Make sure you get a warrenty.
