What was central idea of titanic?

The largest steamship in the world at the time the Titanic

left Southampton, England, on its way to the New York City, under the command of Captain John Edward Smith.

The tragic story of the Titanic illustrates the danger and pure folly of constructing a huge ship without the necessary safeguards to protect passengers in case of disaster. The builder responsible for design and construction of the mega-ship admitted that the ship was made of iron and would definitely sink if damaged. He also said there were not enough lifeboats on board for more than half the passengers because some of the financiers thought the lifeboats would give the deck a crowded look.

Titanic collided with an iceberg at approximately 11:40 pm and sank at 2:20 pm, resulting in the deaths of 1,517 people in one of the deadliest peacetime sea disasters in history. There were 2,228 people on board.

Lifeboat #7 was lowered first, on the starboard side, with only 28 people on board out of a maximum capacity of 65. The Titanic was built to hold 32 life boats, but carried only 20.

Many safety rules were neither practiced before the collision nor observed during the sinking.

What led the creation of suburbs in the early 1900s?

Cars are responsible for suburban life. Before cars people lived in and around the city center. They could walk to downtown, shop, and go to government offices because they were living near them. With the invention of the car people didn't have to stay so near to downtown so they began to build further out. After the men came home from WW2 they wanted new homes for their young families away from the older rundown parts of town, so construction companies began to build vast neighborhoods for the families and because they didn't want to drive all the way to shop stores were built to sell to the new families. Schools were built and eventually malls were created with movie theaters, restaurants, and more stores. Today, some cities have gone back into the older sections, restored older homes and apartments, added outdoor cafes, and having events in downtown so the lost downtowns are becoming places to go and be seen.

What were the strengths and weaknesses of Britain in 1900?

Strengths

  • Britain had the largest empire in the world - this was a source of economic strength for them as they had an abundance of resources which they could trade.
  • Britain was industrialised - in 1900, Britain had undergone an industrial revolution. This meant Britain was a wealthy country as it was the first to have such a revolution.
  • Large navy - the British navy was the largest in the world, twice as big as the next two biggest combined.
  • In 1900, Britain was both politically and socially stable. There had been no revolution to overthrow the monarchy; instead, the gradual loss of power of the monarchy was evolutionary so caused no tension between social classes.

Weaknesses

  • Parliament only allowed men, and women did not have the right to vote.
  • Poverty was a large problem in Britain in 1900. Not only this, but there was extreme class division.
  • There was a huge lack of social mobility (people could not move between classes, eg. from working class to middle class and vice versa - they were "trapped" by the class system
  • There was no real welfare system - the "Poor Law" was ineffective.
  • Low pay was a real problem - the working class were trapped in poverty.
  • The Boer War - Britain did not perform well in the war, despite the size and apparent "advanced" nature of the armed forces. The war also showed a lot about the poverty in the country - 1/3 of recruits had to be turned away as they were so weak and undernourished due to lack of food as a result of low pay.
