Did the US society change for the better in the 1920s?

Many historians do believe America changed for the better in the 1920s. The first world war was over, the country was stable and relatively prosperous. It was a decade of expanded opportunities for middle-class black people, as well as for middle-class women. It was an era of many new inventions such as the radio and talking pictures (what we today call movies, with sound), and an era when men as well as women flew airplanes across the ocean for the first time. More people had a telephone or a car of their own. And thanks to radio, which brought news and educational programs directly into people's homes, people who lived in rural parts of the United States could now hear the best-known and most famous news-makers and keep up with current events as never before.

While it is true that the 1920s were also a time when the Ku Klux Klan grew in power and racial prejudice (as well as anti-Semitism) still existed in the popular culture, not everyone agreed with these views. More black people found opportunities in the north and mid-west that they might not have had previously; and thanks to radio, the public heard Jewish (and Catholic and even Hindu and Muslim) entertainers and scholars, and learned something about the beliefs of those who were different from the majority. Despite America still being segregated, more people of color graduated high school and went on to college than in previous decades. So, while society was far from perfect and America was still segregated, some of the changes in the country did improve people's lives.

What was place kicking like in the 1920s?

Most kicking was done with a dropkick. The ball used in the 1920s had rounder tips and looked much like the ball used in rugby. The NFL changed the shape of the ball in 1934 to what it is today. The tips of the ball were made into more of a point. That was done to help the passing game, to make the ball more aerodynamic. That made dropkicking much more difficult and shortly afterwards it was completely out of the game, replaced by the placekick.

How much did the London cenotaph cost to build in 1920?

The original London Cenotaph was made of wood and plaster. It was errected for the day of celebration June 28 1919 and was meant to be temporary. The public turned the Cenotaph into much more than a focal point of celebration, it became a place of remembrance. Remember, the war had been over for less than a year and the great pain was still very strong. Some spent days in line so they could lay a wreath at the foot of the cenotaph. Captain Ormsby-Gore MP proposed, in the House of Commons, a more permanent structure be built. Sir Edwin Lutyens, the designer of the original structure was asked to make it permanent.

The entire monument was built by Holland, Hannen and Cubitts Ltd for the cost of £7,325 (approx $11,500 US). Lutyens waived his fee for the design. The history of the Cenotaph and how it was built can be read by clicking on the link below.

How did the failure of the league cause World War 2?

The failure of the League did not cause World War II, but it certainly was one of the factors. There were high hopes for the League of Nations, but unfortunately, it proved to be a very weak body, unable to agree on major issues, and bogged down in bickering, as stronger nations like England and France competed for political influence. In the 1930s, when a united stand against the rise of Naziism and Fascism was needed, the League failed miserably.

For example, when Italy (under Mussolini) invaded Abyssinia (today Ethiopia), the Abyssinians begged the League of Nations for help, but the response was half-hearted at best. Sanctions against Italy were agreed upon, but not enforced; in fact, several member countries totally ignored them. The League was not able to get every member nation on the same page, nor was it able to defend a weaker nation against a stronger one. Eventually, Mussolini decided the League would be no threat to his expansionist goals, and he soon cast his lot with another expansionist, Adolph Hitler of Germany.
