What was going on in the 1970's?

A lot of socialism, rooted in the student antics of the 60's.

It was to do with the sudden arrival of girl students in large numbers, with a lot of misdirected maternal sentiment coming out in the form of socialism. As they were now on the pill, the male students could earn an instant reward for talking socialist.

These male students, at warrior-class age, also felt uncomfortable about looking like 'teacher's pet' in front of the girls; they felt they had to put on a lot of rebel-swagger.

This is where the protest movement came from - amorous pursuit, not philanthropy.

Who were the presenters for the children's TV program Tiswas in the 1970's?

The British TV show Tiswas ran from 1974 to 1982, and it had a number of presenters throughout its run. Chris Tarrant and John Asher were the original presenters. Asher left, and other filled in here and there until Trevor East and Peter Tomlinson (who created the show) came in. Tarrant, Tomlinson and East slogged onward. Sally James came aboard later, as did Jim Davidson, but Davidson left after only a few shows (returning for cameos). Tomlinson was dropped at about this time, and John Gorman and Paul Hardin began to come and go. John Gorman and Bob Carolgees got on as regulars, but Lenny Henry, after making a few appearances, did not. Paul Hardin became a bit more frequent, and Sylvester McCoy was considered a regular. Norman Collier also appeared here and there. Personel changes saw everyone gone but Sally James, and she was joined by Gordon Astley, Den Hegarty and Fogwell Flax. David Rappaport, Emil Wolk and Trevor James also appeared intermittently, but by this time, Tiswas was headed toward oblivion for a number of reasons. What is the name of the 1970's song with the lyrics 'You come from the land of ice and snow where the people aren't so jive'?

Your thinking of the Immigrant Song, by the Best band to ever played Led Zeppelin. Lyrics below

ah,

We come from the land of the ice and snow,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,

To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,

We come from the land of the ice and snow,

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,

Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,

For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

Why did the U.S. increase its involvement in the Vietnam War into the 1970s?

US involvement in Vietnam was originally sold to the American people under the guise of stopping communism under the Domino Theory. This theory suggested that communism would topple democratic governments around the world one-by-one, just as dominoes are toppled when placed next to each other. US policy was to stop communism anywhere in the world before it could really get started. Unfortunately, communism was well supported by the Soviet Union and China and both of those countries threw almost unlimited resources into southeast Asia including Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The American people were told that if we don't stop communism in southeast Asia at all costs, the communist flag will fly over the White House. In reality, the Vietnam War was less about communist takeover and more about colonialism (first by the French following WW 2) and the US. Financial considerations were the root of our involvement, mainly due to the large rubber plantations of the Michelin Rubber Company (a French company) and the Shell and Gulf Oil companies who owned vast offshore oil facilities in the Gulf of Tonken. The US simply wanted to protect its business interests in the area. If you look at southeast Asia now, you can see that although communism is the official form of government in Vietnam, democracy DIDN'T topple as predicted. In fact, communist Vietnam and communist China are two of America's largest business trading partners.

What technological device for computers was introduced in the 1970's?

Intel's introduction of single chip microprocessors containing the complete CPU of a computer on one monolithic integrated circuit, starting with their four bit 4004 microprocessor in 1971 followed by their eight bit 8008 microprocessor in 1972. Interestingly both of these microprocessors were originally designed as proprietary products to be sold only to the customer that requested them, while the 4004 was indeed used in the product it was designed for (a business desk calculator) the customer became dissatisfied and agreed to sign the rights back to Intel to sell the 4004 on their own, but the 8008 (and a similar chip designed by Texas Instruments at the same time) was completely rejected and the customer built his product using just standard 7400 series TTL chips so Intel was free to sell the 8008 on their own.

The 8008 eventually lead to the 8080, the modern 80x86 family (including Pentium, Celeron, etc.), and the latest Duo Core, i5, i7, and other multicore Intel microprocessors.
