How many year of school do dentistry have to go through?

Dentistry is a terminal doctoral degree and requires attendance to a specific professional school.

The requirements for dental school mirror the typical "Pre-med" requirements of biology, chemistry, physics and math. Instead of the MCAT(Medical College Admissions Test), prospective candidates take the DAT (Dental Admissions Test). One of the key differences in the exams involves a component called Perceptual Ability, that assesses the candidate's ability to visualize a 3 dimensional item from different perspectives.

As a result, college requirements are the typical four year degree, including graduation.

The length of dental school itself is roughly four years. Every institution has a slightly different curriculum, so the breakdown of when/what is taken cannot be consistently applied across the board.

How can you become a dentist?

A dentist treats and prevents diseases of the teeth, gums and mouth. Eight years of college and dental school studies are usually necessary for a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.). All dentists have to pass additional state tests to obtain their required licenses. Steps: 1. Take high school biology, chemistry, physics, health and mathematics courses. Maintain a high grade point average. 2. Ask your guidance counselor for information on colleges that have a two-year pre-dental program that emphasizes the sciences. Most pre-dental students complete a bachelor's degree. 3. Send for college catalogs and applications. Apply well before the deadline date. 4. Commit yourself to receiving high grades in college, especially in your science courses. 5. Contact the American Dental Association for a list of four-year dental schools accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Make certain you'll meet the admission requirements. (See the ADA Web site at ada.org.) 6. Take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). Your test scores, overall grade point average, science average and recommendations will all weigh heavily in the decision to admit you to a dental school. 7. Understand that the first two years in dental school will consist of classroom and lab courses. The final two years are spent in clinics under the supervision of licensed dentists. 8. Obtain your license by passing additional written and practical state examinations after you've graduated from dental school. Make certain you know what your state's licensing requirements are well before you get to this point. 9. Check on your state's requirements for specialty licenses in the dental field. An additional two to five years of study is required. Tips: Make certain you possess manual dexterity and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Expect to work 7 to 10 hours a day, not including emergencies. Warnings: Expect to pay high premiums for liability insurance and to have large bills for equipment and skilled personnel if you have your own practice.

With dentist is it better to be a DDS or a dr is there a difference?

A Dentist is not a medical doctor, but they are given the same courtesy title 'Dr' in front of their names for having gone through some medical training with the main focus on treating diseases of the oral cavity and oro-facial structures. What do you need to major at college to become a dentist?

The below information is correct, but the bottom line is that you can major in just about anything at the bachelors level, as long as you take the required prerequisites. You will still need to take the DAT (and do well), have roughly 2 years of college, do well on your interview and have a strong science background. We had a wide variety of backgrounds represented in my dental school class -- it is not a show stopper to have a "non traditional" pre-dental degree such as business or education.

---------------------------------------------

High school and college students who want to become dentists should take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, health, and mathematics. College undergraduates planning on applying to dental school are required to take many science courses. Because of this, some choose a major in a science, such as biology or chemistry, while others take the required science coursework while pursuing a major in another subject. Business and communication skills are often also needed in private practice.

Medical Licensing of Dentists

All 50 States and the District of Columbia require dentists to be licensed. To qualify for a license in most States, candidates must graduate from an accredited dental school and pass written and practical examinations.

Education and training : In 2006, there were 56 dental schools accredited by the American Dental Association's (ADA's) Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dental schools require a minimum of 2 years of college-level predental education prior to admittance. Most dental students have at least a bachelor's degree before entering dental school, although a few applicants are accepted to dental school after 2 or 3 years of college and complete their bachelor's degree while attending dental school.

All dental schools require applicants to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). When selecting students, schools consider scores earned on the DAT, applicants' grade point averages, and information gathered through recommendations and interviews. Competition for admission to dental school is keen.

Dental school usually lasts 4 academic years. Studies begin with classroom instruction and laboratory work in science, including anatomy, microbiology, biochemistry, and physiology. Beginning courses in clinical sciences, including laboratory techniques, are also completed. During the last 2 years, students treat patients, usually in dental clinics, under the supervision of licensed dentists. Most dental schools award the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Others award an equivalent degree, Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).

Some dental school graduates work for established dentists as associates for 1 to 2 years to gain experience and save money to equip an office of their own. Most dental school graduates, however, purchase an established practice or open a new one immediately after graduation.

Licensure : Licensing is required to practice as a dentist. In most States, licensure requires passing written and practical examinations in addition to having a degree from an accredited dental school. Candidates may fulfill the written part of the State licensing requirements by passing the National Board Dental Examinations. Individual States or regional testing agencies administer the written or practical examinations.

In 2006, 17 States licensed or certified dentists who intended to practice in a specialty area. Requirements include 2 to 4 years of postgraduate education and, in some cases, the completion of a special State examination. Most State licenses permit dentists to engage in both general and specialized practice.

Other qualifications : Dentistry requires diagnostic ability and manual skills. Dentists should have good visual memory, excellent judgment regarding space, shape, and color, a high degree of manual dexterity, and scientific ability. Good business sense, self-discipline, and good communication skills are helpful for success in private practice.

Advancement : Dentists who want to teach or conduct research usually spend an additional 2 to 5 years in advanced dental training, in programs operated by dental schools or hospitals. A recent survey by the American Dental Education Association showed that 11 percent of new graduates enrolled in postgraduate training programs to prepare for a dental specialty.

You are in middle school What classes should you take if you want to become a dentist?

Your high school course work really doesn't matter to become a dentist. What matters is your GPA, community service, and test scores. The first years of college will be general education. Your education in dentistry will come in dental school. I suggest you take college prep course work in high school to prepare you for college. Make sure your writing and research skills are up to par. I am finding that many high school seniors are not getting the writing and research skills that they will need in college. You should be able to do a 10 to 20 page research paper with the proper formats. For further info on your course work I suggest you go to your high school counselor or career center for help.

Why do some people's teeth turn yellow?

It is possible to have a tooth turn dark because there was no permanent tooth underneath. Mine was a baby tooth and all I was ever told by any dentist was, "You have a baby tooth, with no tooth under it, so I'd recommend leaving it alone unless it gives you problems." It remained and was a healthy tooth until my mid forties. At that time several teeth weakened but I was told that was due to chemotherapy and heavy medications, so the discolored or dark tooth may have lasted longer without the other complications.

Is it ok to chew gum after getting your wisdom teeth pulled?

No. That will cause more bleeding. Never do any action that relates to sucking after oral surgery. It will just promote more bleeding and slow the healing process.

Does coke mess up your teeth?

Assuming that you know what a toothbrush and dental floss are and use them, and assuming that you make the occassional trip to the dentist, neither is harmful. The sugar in sweetened sodas, if left unchallenged by dental hygiene, can promote tooth decay. The artificial sweeteners in "diet" soda is proven not to promote tooth decay.

AnswerThe acid in diet coke causes tooth decay, regardless, although the acidity in diet coke is less than apple juice/apple cider. Although both will stain your teeth. AnswerThey are both horrible for your teeth, but if you want to choose one then go with the diet coke because it doesn't have as much sugars in it.
