Why is the European Union not popular with all Europeans?

The absolute majority of Europeans is most likely rather positive about the European Union, but there has been some negativity towards EU for its whole lifetime.

The most common reason for this is nationalism among European citizens. Some consider that the developments in European integration threaten the sovereignties of their own countries. This is mainly because different organs in EU can make decisions that apply to all member countries even if some of them were against the decision. There has also been some fear that EU will develop to a federation (like U.S. is) which would also be against the idea of a sovereign national state.

EU is also sometimes considered 'distant' when compared to national decision-makers, this may indicate a low state of knowledge about the structures which could be partly causing the criticism towards the so-called suit-men in Brussels.

Is India part of the European Union?

When did Great Britain join the European Union?

England and the rest of the UK joined the European Union on 1 November 1993 when the Treaty on European Union (otherwise known as the Treaty of Maastricht) came into force. No country could have joined before November 1993 as the European Union did not exist till the Treaty on European Union came into force.

On 1 January 1973 the UK joined the European Economic Community (EEC). The EEC was an economic free trade mechanism between sovereign states; it now no longer exists, having been replaced by the European Union.

The EU and the EEC are two very different things. The EEC was an economic free trade mechanism between sovereign states; the EU is a political union with member states succeeding sovereignty to the European Union.

Is euro a currency in Poland?

No, the currency of Poland is the Polish złoty (PLN), but like most other EU member states, Poland is obliged to adopt the euro once the Polish economy meets certain criteria. However, the predicted date of this adoption is gradually put back by the ruling politicians and Poles are increasingly sceptical about the common EU currency.

What country joined the European union in 1957?

In 1957 there was no European Union. Instead, it was called the European Economic Community (which later transformed into the European Union). It had six founding members: Italy, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and West Germany. The United Kingdom was offered to be a founding member, but refused. Denmark, Ireland, and the UK later joined in 1973, Greece was added in 1981, and Spain and Portugal both joined in 1986. West and East Germany later reunified in 1990, three years before the EEC would be engulfed by the EU.

What country was rejected by the EU?

Morocco was the only country to be denied membership to the European Union. It was denied because it is not viewed as a Europeanized country by the EU, although it does label itself as a European Union. However, Morocco still plans on joining the EU and has not given up hope.

Some people think Turkey has been denied membership to the European Union, but this isn't true. Turkey applied for membership 1987. It is somewhat viewed as a Europeanized country by the EU and was even a founding member of the Council of Europe. Turkey has been a candidate for accession to the EU since 1999, and has not yet joined the EU but has not been denied admission. Negotiations started in 2005 and the result is expected to take at least a decade. Turkey is a very controversial topic for the EU and has been the focus of heated debates for decades. Turkey is a Muslim nation with an Arab majority and has a fast growing population and economy. Some countries argue Turkey should join the EU, such as the UK, because they need all the economic help they can get. But some countries, such as France, argue Turkey should be denied admission because they are not truly a European country, and if they were to join, they'd form the majority of EU delegates as they are expected to surpass Germany in population in the next few years.

What does the council of the European union does?

The European union was formed in 1951 just after WW2. It was created to help traders to sell and transport coal and other itemscheaper. Now it is helpful to Europeans as it allows them to travel anywhere in Europe and aims to help poorer countries find work, all they ask in return is thousands of pounds per head per year, for the peaceful removal of nation states and national identity, personal liberty, civil and human rights, democracy, freedom and to not be criticised when it destroys Europe economically. All of this and you get to travel around for free! (so do millions of Eastern Europeans!).

  • The Council of the European Union, which represents the member states, is the EU's main decision-taking body. When it meets at Heads of State or Government level, it becomes the European Council whose role is to provide the EU with political impetus on key issues.
  • The European Parliament, which represents the people, shares legislative and budgetary power with the Council of the European Union.
  • The European Commission, which represents the common interest of the EU, is the main executive body. It has the right to propose legislation and ensures that EU policies are properly implemented.

Some point out that the EU is an undemocratic organisation whose laws are passed by unelected civil servants, which then take priority over the laws of the member countries.
