You are correct to a point. What you describe may on some vehicles reset the light but I answer questions to provide not only an answer but an answer that is best for a novice. An expert would not ask the question in the first place so I know this question was asked by a novice. I want the novice to not just reset the light but to have the ECU scanned to see what is wrong and have it repaired before possible damage is done to the catalytic converter or the O2 sensors.

It is normal for the oil pressure to be high when the engine is first started and is cold. It should settle at around 40 psi once the engine reaches full operating temperature. If it does not, then change the oil and filter and make sure you are using the correct weight oil, which is more than likely 5w30. Use a good oil filter such as Purolator, Wix, or Motorcraft in your Ford. Make sure to use the correct size filter. If none of this helps, then have an oil pressure test run, as your oil pressure gage may be wrong.

depends on which part you need changed, if it is just the switch then you just turn the key to the on position and puch the guide pin underneath in till it slides out...if the shaft is broken then here is what i did.. first removed the heavy tilt spring. 1.remove the snap ring and upper bearing retainers from the shaft under the dash by the floorboard. 2.remove the 2 t30 torc bolts from the side of the housing. 3. use the tilt lever to release the tilt arms from the housing. the arms stay on the lower housing while the pivot pin and housing come off as an assembly. should pull apart far enough for you to replace the old rask gear inside. if the pin is missing try to find it because you dont want it loose in the gear slot.

Get a timing light, they sell them in an auto parts store about 30 bucks, shine it on the surpentine belt, and you should be able to see the mark.

find out what is causing it to overheat first. make sure you have enough water/coolant mixture, and that there is no leaks. You can rent a tester for basically free from Autozone to pressure test your system, and this will also show you if you have a blown head gasket. In something this old, it's usually related to wear/age. If the gauge/idiot light goes up in temp, then goes down and fluctuates, could be related to the thermostat. Start with calling the dealer and ask to speak with a mechanic, and ask him the questions, they will usually give you some pointers on what to look for, or, if that model has a history of certain things going out, he'll tell you if you ask him/her. Then, start with his advice, or failing that, start by replacing the easy and less costly components first. If you know some one who is a mechanic and he'll give you free advice, ask there next ( if you don't do the dealer thing ).

An expensive fix is when the radiator goes bad, which happens a lot ( they get plugged up ).
