How are Adolf Hitler and Charles Degaulle alike?

There are many parallels between Hitler and de Gaulle in terms of their personalities and overall ambitions. Hitler was highly arrogant and overall ignorant (aside from his opinion on Jews, he showed ignorance during Operation Barbarossa, demanding his generals make military decisions which cost Germany greatly in their effort). De Gaulle also proved to be a very arrogant and ignorant individual, often butting heads with Churchill and Roosevelt during some of the most crucial moments of World War II. He was quite clumsy too, in one case boasting about a British plan to attack a Vichy port to the public, giving the Vichy time to prepare themselves so that they could repel the British. Basically, he had a habit of becoming an obstructive nuisance when it came to the Allied war effort.

Furthermore, both were authoritarian in their politics, with Hitler wanting full control over Germany and Europe, and de Gaulle often proclaiming himself as the one true leader of France even before the Allied Invasion of Normandy, while he was in exile in the UK.

On the other hand, Hitler and de Gaulle are different in that they both acquired and used their power differently. Hitler acquired his power through legal means so that he could easily overthrow the other German parties and establish himself and the National Socialist German Worker's Party as the supreme authority in Germany from Hitler's election to his death (of course Hitler died in 1945, and thus died prematurely). Meanwhile, de Gaulle; despite his authoritarianism, acquired leadership over France by legal means like Hitler, but did not establish himself as France's eternal dictator, instead playing mostly within the legal rules and constitution.

What is a guillotine?

OUCH! - IT IS A DEVICE THAT CUTS OFF YOUR HEAD

Invented in 1791 by a Frenchman named Laquiante and Tobias Schmidt, a German engineer, it is named for the French doctor who oversaw its development, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin.

It consists of a large wooden frame housing a heavy metal blade between two upright guides. When lifted and released, the blade falls freely (like an ax) to behead condemned prisoners. It replaced hanging as a method of execution in 18th Century France, and was used on many individuals during the French revolution, notably King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

Similar tools are now made small and sharp enough to prepare a cigar for smoking.

When did World War 2 end in France?

May 7th and 8th of 1945 the Nazi Germans surrendered to the Allied Forces. Field Marshall Montgomery signed the Instrument of Surrender with Admiral Doenitz. There are film clips of this signing you can see on history channel and military channel. In the related link below you can see photos and read the story of the surrender. It did not end the war in the Pacific at that time however.

How is the French government set up?

I am not giving you the answer outright, but just suggesting a good way for you to find it out for yourself, because this will make life easier for you in the future by helping you to be more independent.

One of the best places for information on just about anything is www.answers.com

The CIA have collected some very good and pretty complete information on just about every country in the world. They publish it all on their internet site https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html Just choose the country from the 'drop-down list' and scroll down to see what you want to know.

The 'answers' and 'cia' sites are really good places to get help with lots of school homework; they are also pretty reliable, too, and you don't have as much risk of getting wrong, incomplete or just bad information either, as you sometimes get from the odd 'smart-alecs' on the Wiki Q & A.

Good luck... Aussiecliff

Why did the Americans and british wait until 1944 to invade France?

The Allies, US, UK, Poland, Free France, and others ramped up their manufacturing to a war footing to produce the material requirements for an war. At the same time they were training and supplying troops and gaining the experience and shipping needed to support amphibious invasions.

Then they used two fleets, one from the US, and one from England, and invaded North Africa to remove the Axis pressure on the vital Suez Canal which brought much needed troops and goods from the British Empire to the war effort.

Then they invaded Sicily and eventually Italy to divert Axis men and materiel from the defense of western Europe.

Had the Germans not had to dedicate resources against the Soviets and the Mediterranean Theater of Operations they would have been a much more difficult proposition when the invasion of Europe took place.

What was the line of defense along the French-German border called?

trenches I suspect the answer you're looking for is the Maginot Line...but it was actually constructed after the end of WW I, between 1930 and 1940.

How were wounded soldiers treated in World War 2?

They were usually "patch jobs" and they did the best they could. They didn't have helicopters to come and air-lift them out. It was by the grace of God many survived from their wounds. In some cases there were hospitals near the fighting lines, but generally not enough doctors or nurses.

Many people died in no mans land due to no one being able to help them and more concerned about saving themselves. Yet, there were the few soldiers that managed to drag back wounded soldiers back in the trenches to receive treatment. When a soldier was too injured to continue, he relied on corageous soldiers to bring them back from over the top.
