How does portfolio assessment differ from the traditional testing and from other authentic assessment methods?

Portfolio Assessment is a collection or compilation of student's work. Portfolio Assessment is different from Traditional Testing and other Authentic Assessment. Why? Because portfolio assessment is a broader measure of a student’s knowledge compared to traditional testing and it shows more productivity than other Authentic Assessment. Portfolio does not represent only a mere collection of the student's work but tells or shows the story of the student’s efforts, progress or achievement in given areas. Portfolio is indeed differ from other assessment tools because it is an indispensable tool of authentic assessment and viewed as an organized collection of evidence used by the teacher and student to monitor the growth of student’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a specific content area. Portfolio assessment measures a student’s ability to apply and use knowledge learned in classes and also portfolio has been extensively used in the field of teacher education in which portfolio has a vital role in developing an in-service or a pre-service trainee teacher into a trained one and carried out to monitor the overall performance that he/she developed during the course of training.

How have children's roles changed throughout history?

The concepts of childhood and adolescence are relatively recent, dating from the second half of 18th century. Obviously, all societies have recognized a period of physical depedence up to about age 8-11. However, the notion of an extended period between that age and adulthood is fairly new. Before that, children aged, say 12 or 13, generally worked like adults, read the same books as adults, dressed like adults - and were (often) punished as adults. This is something of a simplification, as they didn't have the same rights as adults and there were some exceptions; nevertheless, it is a useful starting point. Literature written specifically for children only started to appear in the late 1770s, for example and if one looks at paintings from before about 1770 it is striking that young children dressed in the same way as adults. Until the 1950s there was no music aimed specifically at teenagers and arguably there were no specifically teenage clothing styles, either. Until well into the twentieth century the great majority of kids left school at age 14 and went straight into paid employment. In some cases they went into appreticeships, but essentially their formal education was over. The classic work on the subject is Phillippe Aries, Centuries of Childhood which first appeared in French in 1960. It has been translated into English and makes very interesting reading. Joncey

How do teachers and adults influence the child in the early learning period?

Characteristics of early learning

During the early childhood period children's learning across the various dimensions of development (for

example, physical, motor, linguistic, emotional) is greater than at any other period, but is also highly

variable across the dimensions. It also occurs very rapidly, is episodic in nature and is very susceptible to

environmental conditions (Shepard et al., 1998). These factors contribute to making the assessment of early

learning and development very challenging.

The nature of early learning

This section of the paper discusses the characteristics of early learning and identifies some key theoretical

constructs that guide the teaching, learning and assessment processes during early childhood. Theoretical

considerations have been influential in shaping new and emerging approaches to assessment and the most salient

of these are discussed in relation to their implications for the assessment of earlylearning and development.

How to assess early learning

This section of the paper explains the significance of a narrative approach to assessment in early childhood.

A number of methods of assessing children's early learning and development are discussed. The process of

documentation of information derived about children's learning is described with specific reference to the

work of practitioners in Reggio Emilia, in Northern Italy.

A narrative approach to assessment of learning in early childhood

Narrative or story approaches have been used by a number of educationalists both to understand practice

and to communicate with others their thoughts about that practice. Bruner (1999b, p. 175) describes narrative

as a mode of thought and a vehicle for meaning making. However, he also cautions that if narrative is to be

made an instrument of mind on behalf of meaning making, it requires work on our part -reading it, making it,

analyzing it, understanding its craft, sensing its uses, discussing it (p. 176). The implications then for narrative

assessments are that they are not ends in themselves, but must be used as tools for reflection and for sharing

with others in order to seek out possible other meanings. From Bruner's perspective then, narrative has both

a meaning-making function and a communicative one.

Paley's work (1979; 1981) provides us with an example of a practitioner who has made extensive use of

narrative in order to share her ethnographic observations of children. Her case-study narratives have been

published in a series of books beginning in 1979 and have continued for over two decades. They illustrate

her careful listening and deep reflection on what children had to say. Paley's work is of interest in relation

to assessment since it clearly illustrates how this particular practitioner continually modified her teaching

in response to her observations of children. Her use of the tape-recorder illustrates how reflection can be

achieved even in a busy early education setting and especially how it can be done in discussion with children.

Genishi (1992) too emphasises the importance of storying for conveying aspects of everyday experiences in

early childhood settings. The potential of stories as powerful tools was expressed by Witherell and Noddings

(1991, p. 280) when they stated;

They provide us with a picture of real people in real situations, struggling with real problems… They

invite us to speculate on what might be changed and with what effect.

Learning stories involve a narrative approach to assessment and we look at this credit-focused approach next.

What supplies are needed to exhibit at art and craft events?

Setting Up at Craft ShowsDepends on your crafts. You want to make sure you give yourself ample room to show your wares. Avoid giving them only one level to look at, such as just two tables. Have a couple book cases or something behind you with wares on them. Gives you more of a panorama look and they will tend to look more closely. Just tables they will scan and walk on by, give them more to look at and you will improve your odds of them stopping, then you can give your sales pitch or answer questions. Make sure to skirt your tables, it is a more pleasing look. Decorate a bit so it doesn't look so blah. Try to show your wares in a theme. For instance, if you sell bird houses, have them hanging from small trees, even if the tree's are plastic, just gives off that homey feeling. answerSpaces vary, we have found that "most" are 10 by 10 indoors and somewhat larger out doors. Ease of load in load out is very important. Watch people carry heavy wooden cases, tubs etc. and you'll get the idea. Go to some shows and look at the displays. Some of the juried shows will not let you in with only tables. They want to see photos or slides of your display. Our display is built with PVC as a frame with foam core panels covered with cloth. Each piece is on casters so we are able to roll in. The display is is 8 peices and can be adjusted up to accomodate a corner spot. Most of the craft shows I attend are outside, and therefore, my most cherished purchase was an easy to put up sun shade. I started out with one that had to be assembled, and it took me forever to set up.

The next most important thing is the wonderful plastic storage cartons you can now purchase. I use a standard moving cart to transport them. I usually pile the supply cartons up and place a table top across them. I stabilize them with bungee cords.

However, my merchandise is displayed by hanging strips of fabric from the bars of the sun shade, and attaching my work on the strips. The only thing I use the table for is my order catalogs.

Don't forget that most shows require the proper forms and paperwork, such as a seller's license, and tax re-sale number. Be sure to find out what all the rules are, since each show is different.
