When was D-day in Germany?

Operation Overlord - D-Day

D-Day was originally scheduled for June 5, 1944. SHAEF arrived at this date by considering two factors-moonlight and tide. H-hour would be near sunrise, when the amphibious troops would have a rising tide, which would enable them to land close to obstacles without coming ashore on top of them. The paratroopers needed a full moon for visibility. The days with the proper tide-moonlight formula closest to the target date were June 5, 6 and 7. The 5th was chosen for D-Day to allow a buffer in case the attack needed to be postponed.

The long awaited establishment of a "Second Front" took place on 6 June 1944. American, British and Canadian troops invaded France and set up beachheads in the Normandy region. By the end of June, the Allies were able to put 850,000 men and 150,000 vehicles ashore. After heavy fighting, the Allies were able to gain a solid footing in France and the success of a second front was assured. Allied air superiority was a key factor in the success by limiting German counter attacks, and possible reinforcements from reaching the beaches.

Another month of heavy fighting would occur before the Allies were able to break out of the beach areas and into open country. Once clear of the coastal areas, the German Army was no longer capable of holding the Allied forces back. The German Army began a long, hard retreat back toward their own borders.

Germany was now faced with a two front-war. Hitler was forced to split his army in order to face both the Red Army in the East and the British, American and Canadian armies in the West. Under this relentless pressure, the Germans would be forced to surrender in just less than one year.
