A ghost will show themselves for multiple reasons. One of the main reasons is to ask for help. They often need assistance and need a mortals assistance to perform a task needed for them to pass on. They could also be a family member wanting to say goodbye before passing on. A spirit will almost never attack a human and often just need help.

It is said by some ancient Eastern religions that we have 3 bodies or "coverings"; a gross physical body, a luminous subtle astral body, and an even more subtle casual body.
When a sentient being dies, it looses its gross physical body. The subtle astral body and casual body are left. What we are seeing as a "ghost" is the subtle astral body which is still present. The casual body is much harder to see.
Since we are used to inhabiting the gross physical body, we see the astral body as less real and more ethereal. However, if we happen to lose our physical body, as in death, the astral body would seem more real.

An Additional Point Many people have been saying that they can't hurt you or they are imaginary, but they can hurt you and there have been many reports. And I wouldn't say ghosts, I would say "spirits" It's a much better term for them and really they are spirits that are trapped on earth. Are any of the Thirteen Ghosts from the movie based off of anyone?
I could be wrong, but I don't think so. The movie Thirteen Ghosts (2001) was actually a remake of a really fun old movie by the same name, which came out in 1960. The movie was about a boy and his family who move into a house that is haunted by thirteen ghosts.
The movie really isn't very scary (it's really campy, actually) but it has a great gimmick to it. The DVD comes with a special "ghost viewing/ghost removing lens" (which is actually just a card with a piece of clear red plastic, and a piece of clear blue plastic). If you look through the red piece, you see the ghosts on the screen, and if you look through the blue piece, you don't (if you just plain look at the screen, without looking through the lens at all, you just see the ghosts very faintly).
Anyway, each of the ghosts has a separate, distinct personality: like, there's an Italian chef ghost, and a headless lion tamer ghost, who has a ghost lion accompanying him, and then there's a ghost that is nothing but a pair of arms holding an axe, another ghost that is just a big head, a lady ghost who always hangs from a noose, etc.
So, I suppose it's possible that the ghosts in the Thirteen Ghosts remake were based on real people. But I think it's more likely that they just followed in the original movie's footsteps and based their 13 ghost characters on those ghosts.

the old butler dude is just ahead when you get in. note, though, that when he walks, he doesnt use legs, also, and you don't actually see him go through the wall. nor is there an item. if there was a point in the girl, then that would make this more interesting, or if you chased the butler, he would eventually serve you goods at a cheap price, if only!
What kind of camera should be used for ghost hunting?
All you have to do is leave the camera on until you see something drift around. To add to this: the easiest way is with a double exposure. Place your camera (one capable of making double exposures) on a secure tripod and place a friend in a chair. Take a meter reading, then stop down one stop below the correct exposure. Take the photo. Have your friend leave. Re-shoot the empty chair at the same exposure. (You can take these in either order; it doesn't matter). The resulting ghost-like image of your friend will be a fake, but so are all photographs of ghosts, by definition. It is impossible to take a verifiably genuine photograph of a ghost because it is too easy to take ungenuine ghosts.
