The question you ask is too involved for a proper answer. You may want to go to a car parts store, or book store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.

On a '01 Pontiac Grand Prix GT why would the ignition not turn all the way off so you can't take the key out?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is a solenoid & plunger next to the ignition switch inside the steering column that stops functioning. The plunger must be retracted in order for the switch to turn all the way so the key can be removed. I manually inserted the plunger and took out the key.

This part failed in my 2001 Grand Prix GT as well about a year ago. My local mechanic explained the part and what it does to me and recommended to just remove it and not reinstall a new one.

As it was explained to me, this interlock makes sure that the car is in PARK before allowing key removal. Note that without it, the ingnition can be switched off and the key can be removed while the car is moving (a dirty trick, which will lock the steering wheel). Also, without it, you might accidentally shut the car off and remove the key while parking without actually putting it in PARK.

Probably a nice interlock to have.

OR - You have the vehicle in gear. Shift to park and remove.

I thought the solenoid/plunger was the problem with our 01 Grand Prix GT as well (couldn't remove key and the steering wheel didn't lock) but the GM service shop told me the problem was the solenoid(?) at the base of the shift lever on the center console. Required replacement of the entire shift lever assembly as can't replace the solenoid part only. Total bill was $821.67 parts & labor. Bit of a shocker! Am wondering if I was taken!?

Let me put my 2 cents in, I have been dealing with the same problem for about 2 years. My work around is to tilt the sterring wheel up and reach under the column and press up on the solenoid while I turn the key out of the lock. A lot cheaoer than a repair.

I just had to deal with a somewhat similar situation. I have an '03 GTP, coming home from work when I would go to use my directional the engine would shut down, every freaking light on the dash would begin to flash like a bad Las Vegas sign. The key wouldn't come out as well.

I got the car home and started checking the harnes for breaks. Everything was fine, good continuity on all the wires (combination switch, ignition switch, series II and leads to keyed tumbler). After doing some reading and talking with a fantastic non-GM mechanic I replaced the ignition switch itself.

Everything previously mentioned goes through the ignition switch and reports to the security system and, as far as my experience goes, grabs your key and holds it. Also, the book says you don't have to have power on to reset the ignition tumblers - BALOGNEY! If the battery isn't connected, the ignition won't cycle properly allowing the tumblers to seat correctly and the plunger to release your key! $94.00 cost for the new ignition switch purchased at an aftermarket parts shop. :)

subaru ac low pressure fitting locationThe low pressure fitting for filling is what I hope you are looking for.It is located on the aluminum line coming [The larger fitting} into the the rear of the compressor. Vehicles today are sensitve as to level of refridgerant charge.3 to 5 ouces can make the difference in good operation and poor operation. Before it is decided to charge system it is best to make sure that all other ac componets are proper such as both fans up front operational, condenser in front of radiator clean,Hot cold blend door is actually moving all the way to cold. Also the cars cycle the compressor based on temp not pressure outlet temp usually never goes below 45.That sounds cold but when it is 95 out with 90 percent humidity with the sun baking down recirculation will be desired hope this helps

Pounds to foot pounds?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Assuming the question refers to torque, then 1 ft-lb = 12 in-lbs.

If you have a torque wrench reading inch-pounds, divide by 12 to get foot pounds.

Conversely, multiply foot pounds by 12 to get inch pounds.

If you want to get a little more technical, then read on.

Torque quantifies force applied in a twisting action, such as tightening a bolt with a wrench. The longer the lever arm (distance the force is applied from the point of rotation) the greater the torque. This assumes the force is applied in a direction perpendicular to the lever arm, which is the normal case in practice.

Formally, the definition of torque is force multiplied by distance, or force acting perpendicular to the lever arm multiplied by the length of the lever arm.

If you are doing something like using a torque wrench on a car, you steady the connection of the wrench to the bolt or nut to make sure the force you are applying is perpendicular to the axis define by the length of the bolt. Then the reading on the torque wrench is an accurate measure of the torque applied to the nut or bolt.

First remove the resovoir tank to have more space. Remove drive belt. Two top bolts and 1 side bolt to remove alternator plus connections( power and ground). Then 3 remove 3 bolts from tensioner housing and remove. Should come out with heater hose fittings. Be careful the fittings could break in manifold. Used Dorman heater hose fittings # 47065 from local autoparts store autozone/ oreilly's have replaced them 6 times in past year. 6th was 2 days ago.keep blowing out... its true practice makes perfect. How do you remove the rear speaker covers to change the speakers in a 99 grand prix gt?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

See Related LinksSee the Related Link for "Replacing stock speakers" to the bottom for the answer. AnswerYou will need to remove the back seat in order to remove the back dash and this will allow you to remove the back speaker covers.

I just did the speakers this past weekend in a 2001 Grand Prix and am pretty sure it is the same. Take the lower part of the seat bench out first. There are two plastic loops at the base of the seat that release the seat, while holding the loops with outward pressure, just pull the seat bottom up and out. The seat back is removed by removing the two large nuts that hold the seat belts (If I remember right they were about 17mm). There are two other nuts on either side that use 10mm that need to be removed. Once the four nuts are removed, lift the seat back straight up to unhook the four hooks that hold the seat back in place. After removing seat back the two interior plastic retainers need to be pulled out to get the rear deck/speaker grills removed.

Once you are down to the speakers they can be removed by removing the four screws with a 1/4 inch socket wrench. Carefully lift the speakers out as they are still connected to the wiring harness. Lift the speaker up just enough to disconnect the plastic wire retainers from the speakers. (If there is not enough slack in the wire to do this from up top, they can be disconnected from inside the trunk.) Cut the plastic clips off leaving as much wire as possible. Either strip the wire ends and crimp new ends on or splice the new harness in.

GMs color coding for Positive and Negative is less than intuitive!! Here it is:

Right Rear speaker:

(+) Dark Blue

(-) Light Blue

Left Rear speaker:

(+) Brown

(-) Yellow

Good luck. I put Clarion SRG6921R and am very happy with them. Even though the tweeter protrudes quite a bit there is still plenty of clearance. For the price and if you are not running an amp they can't be beat!

Can you still turn the radio on and other accessories? If so then I would say that the ignition switch is bad. It is not properly stopping the current anymore. Hope this helps.
