Will over-the-counter headache medicine lose its effectiveness if taken daily to relieve chronic headaches?

It can, especially if it contains caffeine. Daily ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), and aspirin (Bayer) can cause damage to the stomach lining, and using acetaminophen daily, in particular if you also drink alcohol, can cause damage to the liver. To reduce the risk of stomach problems, take buffered products, such as Migralex.

However, the real concern with taking OTC medication daily is that you could be causing your own chronic headaches. When you take an abortive headache medication with caffeine (Excedrin, Anacin, BC Powder, Quick Release Crystals) more than 2-3 days a week, you can develop rebound headaches. Rebound - because once the medication leaves your system, the headache always returns.

Medication Overuse Headaches are particularly insidious in relation to migraines, because not only can you develop Chronic Daily Headache, but until you remove the offending medication for 6 weeks to 3 months, no preventative medication will work. Rebound headaches can be caused by caffeine (dietary or in medications), by narcotic medications, and by barbiturates. Rebound headache are much less common with aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. In fact, taking aspirin may prevent medication overuse headaches.

Why has a head been hurting continously for about 3 weeks now when you have taken every kind of medication there is and the doctors are all quacks. Needing help what causes a headache for this long?

This is difficult to answer without more information--it's important to know where the pain is, what type (aching, stabbing, throbbing), and what intensity.

However, sinus headaches are a possibility as they can last quite a long time and do not respond very well to pain medication alone. If it is a sinus headache, you need to take something to get rid of the problem in the sinuses, like Mucinex, for instance, along with the pain medication. Don't expect it to help immediately, but within a day or so the pain should get better. This type of headache would be characterized by pain around the eyes, across the cheeks, or in the forehead--or possibly all three. You might also be congested or have a sore throat.

Sometimes, migraines can last this long as well, and regular pain medication won't kick those, either. For this, you need something that targets migraines specifically, like Maxalt or Imitrex.

If the pain is very intense, it could be cluster headaches. These are very, very painful headaches that last about 15 minutes to 3 hours and occur every day (sometimes several times a day) for a period of time--weeks or even months. They feel like someone's shoving an ice pick into your eye. They occur more frequently in men than women, but some women are unlucky enough to get them as well. The pain is usually on one side of the head, and very rarely switches between sides. Cluster headaches are quite rare, but a possiblity.

Good luck on figuring out your problem. Keep trying the doctors, not all of them are quacks. A neurologist should be able to, at the very least, rule out some possibilities for you.

Could i be pregnant if i just lost my virginity this past week now every since then all i have is cramps in my tummy bad headaches and the feeling like im going to throw up my food everytime i eat?

No, you're just thinking about it way too much. You don't get the morning sickness or any of the above from a couple of days. You should always use protection! If you would have, you wouldn't worry about it now.

What causes pain beneath a crown?

Several things can cause pain under a crown. First, how old is the crown. If it was just placed; it could be something simple, like the bite being high and the pressure from biting down eventually irritates the tissues and the tooth starts to throb. If it is an older crown, likely there is decay on the tooth under the crown. If the decay has traveled into the nerve, it is possible the nerve has been damaged and needs endodontic treatment. Usually, the symptoms for this are pain to hot & cold temperatures which linger.

What would cause a lip piercing to start hurting after a year?

There can be many causes. One thing to check out is whether the area has somehow become infected. This could happen if material gets trapped in the piercing. If it continues, it would be a good idea to have it looked at by a health care professional, to rule out something serious (and hopefully, to get some relief).

What is a stress headache?

Stress headaches can start from the shoulders right up to the neck to the base of the skull and are caused by the muscles tensing up without the person realizing it and causing a disruption in proper blood flow. The nerves will also lead up to the jaw area, right up to the eyes and forehead. It's a dull pounding and can also be caused from staring at the computer too long to fluorescent lighting. Many offices are changing to "natural lighting" and computer screens are becoming "more eye friendly." It's wise to cope with your stress headache by taking up yoga, taking a walk during lunch (if at school or work) and learning to cope with stress in a better way. Many Japanese companies have made time for their employees to have a work-out and stretch their muscles and increase their oxygen intake and have a significantly higher rate of work input from their employees.

Why would a 17-year-old girl keep getting headaches in the temple and experiencing stars in her eyes and then a black out in one eye if she is very active with school and working and cheering?

==Not to be an alarmist, but . . . == . . . fergoodnessake, get her to a doctor RIGHT AWAY! Those symptoms are not signs of stress but of something seriously pathological. It may be a good idea to see if she has any allergies. When I would get headaches like that, always in the same place, the MD first tried to put me on high blood pressure medicine ( I don't have HP). Then I would still get the headaches. I don;t have allergies that I know of except to Codiene, but I had been outdoors alot, grasses, weeding, the weather was dry. I was then given Imatrex to use. It helped if you take it ( I was taking 1/2 pill) once you first sense the headache coming on. Don't wait or it takes longer for it to go away. Even though the Imatrex worked, I didn't want to have to take a pill every day. I told my MD that I thought I might have a sinus infection, I did not have any of the usual signs of having one, but thought it worth a try. I was given a Zpak ($40) for 3 pills, ( antibiotic) it cleared it right up. Not had once since. I also have been using some samples of Nasonex the MD gave me when I notice being stuffed up of having any sinus drainage. Worth a look, hope this helped some. stress, too much sugar, blood pressure may be high, have her checked out by physican as soon as you can there may be an underlying problem It may just be a migraine, these are the symptoms I get. But I did get checked to make sure it was nothing serious as everyone is different. ==Floaters== I, too, see stars and black spots in my eyes. The stars I see right before I get a migraine and the black spots are, the eye doctor told, "floaters" where I have torn something in my eye and it bled, and that is the blood floating around. I would like for you to take her to a doctor. Good luck and God Bless:) ==Black out, not black spots== The question writer mentioned a blackout in one eye, not black spots. Blackouts, full or partial, are common to migraines but could be a symptom of something far more serious. A neurologist should be consulted.

What could be wrong if you have pain in your back and neck with numbness and some dizzyness and headaches but X-rays and a sinus ct show nothing?

X-rays wouldn't really show much. When I had an X-ray done of my neck it showed the curve of my neckbone being backwards. So I was set up with a MRI to see if I had a herniated disk. The MRI showed degenerative disc disease and a bulging disk. A X-ray won't show those things. It may be disks that are pressing on nerves. I have all of your symptoms and have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia by three family doctors and a reumetologist. I do notice that when I take sinus pills that my symptoms are few. Don't know why. You should ask to see a rheumetologist or a neurologist.
