Hiking and Backpacking

Hiking is going for a walk, but doing it in the wilderness. Backpacking is taking that walk one step further and refers to hiking while carrying a pack on your back. A backpack with extra gear and supplies usually implies longer trips. What you take with you and how how far you hike is up to you. Whether it is a half day jaunt along a local park trail or a week in the deep forest, hiking and backpacking improves people's physical and mental health and general well-being.

What are the five stages of building a fire?

I'm not sure if there are 5 stages or not but here are some things to remember.

  1. Clear out a safe area, away from tents, low hanging tree limbs, ignition sources, pathways. Remove all burnable material away from the fire area for several feet in all directions.
  2. Make sure that you have dry "tinder" to start the fire with. Smaller is better. Start with small twigs and slowly work your way to larger wood. Green wood will not burn well and is not good to try and start a fire with.
  3. Before you strike a match, make sure that you have enough wood at hand to keep the fire burning as someone is gathering more wood. If you are alone, have enough wood on hand to do all you need the fire to do. Never leave a fire unattended. I have seen too many people start a fire and then run to gather more wood only to return and find the fire has used up all the starter wood and gone out.
  4. If you are cooking with your fire, coals cook better than flames. Flames are unreliable and can burn the food. As your fire grows, move the coals to one side, preferably the side that the smoke is not going to. As you cook, you can rake more coals from the fire to your cooking area.
  5. When you are finished with your fire, pour water onto the fire and stir the coals with a stick. Continue to do this until the fire is completely out and there are no more glowing coals. If it is cool enough to touch, it is cool enough to leave. Many forest fires are started by unattended fires that campers "thought" were out.
  6. Be safe. Allow no running or playing with or near the fire area.

What is the correct way to use a pocket compas?

Pocket compasses are great. First thing to do is to make sure that you are not holding the compass near a metal belt buckle or any other metal object. Metal belt buckles have caused many people to wander off in the wrong direction. The metal will effect the needle on the compass.

Hold the compass in front of you. Line up the north arrow and the "N" on the compass card. That is the part that has all the compass points on it. N, S, E, W. Then turn your body until the direction that you need to travel on the compass is in front of you while keeping the North arrow lined up with the "N" on the compass card.

Then look in the direction that the compass directs you and pick an object in the distance that lines up with your direction of travel. You may now put the compass away and travel to that point or object. Then re-do the steps over and pick out a new object in the distance. This will keep you going in a straight line. Just looking at the compass all the time will cause you to walk a lot farther than you need to and you may even miss where you want to go.

What is the distance in kilometers from toronto to Scotland?

Since this category is hiking and backpacking, I feel that I must tell you; "You can't get there from here." Well you can but you can't hike there. Too much open ocean and not enough land. However, Toronto is 5,290 kilometers or 3,287 miles in a straight line from Glasgow, Scotland. I would love to go to Scotland and backpack around but I think I'll fly there and then do some hiking.

An experienced and seasoned hiker and backpacker like a light infantry unit would be expected to cover about 250 miles in a week. The distance is 1,237 miles so five weeks should handle it if and only if: # You have the physical stamina to complete the task. # You have the willpower to complete such a journey. # You have the proper footwear for that kind of hike. # You receive clearance to hike through the various tunnels and bridges enroute. # You don't get involved in a clash with some idiot driver. # You avoid being hauled into some County Clink as a nut-case. # You don't waste time collecting wildflowers and rock samples along the way. # You have adequate funds to resupply your rations enroute. # You know how to properly take care of your feet. # You remember to keep properly hydradeted at all times, change your socks three times a day, begin the journey with a good physical examination, avoid alcohol, tobacco, caffine, drugs or other stimulants, and Good Luckon your Quest.

Where does footpath erosion usually happen?

Erosion happens anywhere there is a soft (or non-durable) surface. Softer, siltier soils are prone to erosion, as are wet areas where there is a lot of mud. Often, hikers will step off the maintained trail if it is rutted and wet, forging a new parallel trail to the established trail; doing so tramples and kills vegetation, which leads to more erosion.

Erosion happens on steep slopes if they are not properly drained. Also, hikers can cause erosion by cutting switchbacks instead of walking their full length. Basically this is just where a new path is cut by lots of people walking along it.
